Mac Os X 10.5.2 was just released. It supposedly Improves the accuracy of the grammar checker.
Let's hope they packaged a bit of Lorinda & Smokey in that one (not the real thing, just a copy)… it would be quite an improvement |

Let us know if you see any issues with the 10.5.2 update and the grammar checker. The Apple grammar checker isn't as good as the Microsoft one, but it will get better over time. I found the reliable sentence to check if it's working is "I are a jelly donut.". After trying many bad grammar sentences in the 10.5 prereleases, that's the first one I found it would hit every time

You're right… the grammar checker catches "I are" (or "we am", FWIW).
But I haven't seen much improvement with 10.5.2 (still misses obvious grammar errors) |

I suppose that's helpful for the two people left in the world who don't speak their native tongue *and* intermediate English
Now, if Apple bundled a grammar checker that helped with elementary-school French grammar....
Levity aside, catching even elementary-level errors is/will be useful for anyone learning English or who may be uncertain about the strength of his/her English , and I'm glad to see Apple providing this as a system service, even if the grammar errors it finds are currently limited.

While I don't know if its true, it wouldn't surprise me if it's going to become one of the services used as Pages advances.
The underlying architecture from Apple does have parameters to allow multiple languages and we are taking advantage of that, even though right now Apple only provides services for English. I'm sure that either Apple or third parties will provide other languages in the future
The architecture that I made for Neo also allows other non-Apple grammar checkers to be integrated with the same interface in the future should any really good ones come on the scene. I was looking into Link grammar, but it didn't seem to be any better than the Apple one.
