Sorry -- I just woke up and went ahead and did the steps, except for actually disabling a font menu, before reading your response to my message of last night. In the process, I made a screen shot that you may find useful in communicating with others, and so I pass it along now.

I will go ahead and install the patch as you advise and if you do not hear from me within the next 10 days on this particular issue, please assume that your patch has worked. And I thank you in advance.

Thank you for the Font Book screen snapshot. It indicates that you have more than one set of Arial fonts enabled on your machine.

This give me hope that the fix in my test patch will work. Since the compressed text in Calc only occurs with the Arial font, the fact that you have more than one Arial font makes my original theory (that an Arial font is getting disabled by Spotlight) possible.

I you can post again next Friday and tell us if there is any problem, that would be helpful. 10 days may be too long as I suspect that I may need to release an official patch in 10 days because Apple is expected to release Mac OS X 10.6.2 very soon.

Since you have not posted anything in the last week, is it safe to assume that the test patch has fixed this bug?

We have released a patch containing the fixes from the test patches. Can you install the patch and let us know if you still see the problem?

The fix is included in NeoOffice 3.0.1 Patch 1. You can download the patch from the following URL:

http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/patch.php

Also, the fix is included in NeoOffice 2.2.6 Patch 1. You can download that patch from the following URL:
