I can't get .xls files to open in jcalc instead of the text editor. Any suggestions? I've been through all of the option screens and everything seems to be set up right.

Did you try explicitly setting the file type in the File > Open dialog of NeoJ to Excel Spreadsheet instead of its default "all types"? Try using the explicit "Microsoft Excel" entry with the version corresponding to the one that generated the spreadsheet files.
