Is it possible to stay logied in in the forum longer?

It always logs me out after some weeks/months.

I don't think this is possible. The software that we use for this site does need to do some periodic "house cleaning" and remove old, unused login sessions to keep the system running smoothly.

I'd like to stay logged in from one day to the next, but when I log in, I don't see a button that allows me to stay logged in, like I do on some of the other forums I frequent. I could have sworn there used to be such a setting on the site, but I can't find it.

I don't mind being logged out occasionally, but it's an (admittedly minor) annoyance to have to log in every day.

Was I imagining that I used to be able to stay logged in? Smile

That was a long time ago. Since that time, every login path into the forum software has been exploited at one time or another by spammers to post massive amounts of spam. The only way to stop this flood of spam was to disable automatic login and force all users to fill in the random security code when logging in.

Thanks for the info, Patrick. I guess I didn't notice the switch until recently.

Yes, as long as you keep visiting the site periodically, your session never expires. But if you shutdown your machine overnight, your web session will likely expire before you reboot.

All you have to do is to check the forum at least twice per day and you will be logged in forever Wink.

Best wishes,
Oscar

I think that post is probably spam. Sad

I suspected that too since royliza posted from India. Since their post merely reiterated what has already been posted in this forum, I deleted their post.

I may drift off-topic on occasion, but spam?
Or did something happen in the mean time??
I am losing track of the posts here. Two weeks left to finish a Ph.D. thesis, and my mind is spilling..

Best wishes,
Oscar

You replied to a post by new user royliza and royliza post contained a regurgitation of what I had already posted in this old thread long ago.

Since royliza is a non-donor posting from India on an old thread which a reply that duplicates existing replies, both Smokey and I concluded that royliza's post was a spammer's test post.

Unfortunately, you replied to royliza's post before Smokey or I were able to delete royliza's post.

Does that make sense?

In theory, now you can have your web browser remember your username and password when you visit our login page. Personally, I don't like my web browser to remember such things but if you are comfortable with that (and many people seem to be), then that web browser feature should now work.

The reason that it should now work is that I have turned off the requirement that you enter a security code when you login. Since there was a recent surge in spam recently, all of the forums now require some minimum donation. With the donation requirement in place, requiring a security code at login seems a bit overkill so I have turned it off.

Hopefully the donation requirement is enough to keep out most spam.
