Just wondering if a version of NeoOffice comparable to OO 3.2 was in the works.

Blessings,

At this time, we are planning on upgrading to OpenOffice.org 3.2.1 when it is released. Our experience from past releases is that OpenOffice.org X.X.0 release have new features but also a lot of new critical crashing bugs. Since the most obvious crashing bugs get fixed in their X.X.1 release, we usually wait to upgrade until after their X.X.1 version is released.

Assuming OpenOffice.org 3.2 will be released in December 2009 and that they release OpenOffice.org 3.2.1 in their usual timeframe (3 months later), we will likely start a NeoOffice 3.2.1 Early Access Program in the spring of 2010.

In the meantime, we will be starting the NeoOffice 3.0.2 Early Access Program in late December 2009. That release will have the following new features:

1. Real native highlight coloring like in Apple's Safari and TextEdit applications

2. Improved font kerning

Screen snapshots of these features are in this forum topic.

We haven't had a significant upgrade in a while. Will you be moving to 3.3.X code in the near future?

Right now, our biggest priority is making sure that NeoOffice works with Apple's upcoming release of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. Apple is rumored to be releasing this new version this summer.

Apple historically has made many changes in each new Mac OS X release that causes parts of NeoOffice's native code to not work. Lion is expected to be no different and we have already identified several major issues that are very likely to occur.

Since our donation levels only support one half time programmer (me), just handling the text layout issue for Lion is likely to use up all available development time before Lion is released and the possible Java and Mac OS X bugs that appear will likely use up all available development time for at least a few months after Lion is released.

I realize that some NeoOffice users may not be happy with this. However, the text layout issue is a potentially serious one for not only NeoOffice, but also for OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice as well. If Apple removes the old "ATSUI" text layout functions (and it appears likely since Apple has marked them as deprecated), all three office suites will crash on launch. So, to ensure that at least one of the three works on Lion, we are reimplementing a large portion of our custom code and to use the new "CoreText" text layout functions.

What will be the lowest version of OSX that supports NeoOffice once the CoreText code is implemented - or will NeoOffice still have ATSUI available dependent on OS version?

We will support Mac OS X 10.5 and higher but only on Intel machines. Mac OS X 10.5 is the lowest version that I have been able to compile OpenOffice.org-based code with CoreText functions.

Mac OS X 10.4 and PowerPC users running 10.4 or 10.5 will still have access to NeoOffice 3.1.2 from our download site that NeoOffice 3.0.2 currently occupies for at least a year after our Lion-compatible release. We are not going to release a PowerPC version of the CoreText code though because I have already found compiling OpenOffice.org-based code on PowerPC and 10.5 to have some stability issues and given that PowerPC downloads have dropped down to only 10% of our downloads, the potential donations from PowerPC users running Mac OS X 10.5 is not likely enough to pay for the development time to do such a release.
