Greetings Allll!

Subject lines says it all. If Mac OpenOffice 1.9.71s1 is truly dead now, is there any way NeoOffice can salvage the bones and implement all that hard labor spent?

Thanks!

On the contrary, 1.9m71s1 is the first of the OOo 2.0 milestones to actually launch on Mac OS X. It's far from dead. Assuming not too many more drastic changes come in the following milestones, it's likely that localized, 10.3.x-only releases of 2.0 for X11 will be out within a month or so of the final releases on the other platforms.

If you haven't already read our "A Brief History of OpenOffice.org and the NeoOffice Projects" in the NeoWiki, you should do so. Smile

The eWeek article, while the best coverage so far on the state of 2.0 on the Mac, still got some things "wrong" or "not quite completely right" (everything else I've seen has failed miserably at reporting the story and jumped on sensationalism).

OOo on the Mac is not dead. The X11 build, which is sine qua non for Mac development, is now more or less caught up with the other platforms. The only Aqua native work is happening in Neo/J, but that doesn't mean that in the future 1) the current X11 porting team won't try to (re-)start the Aqua port or 2) the politics of the OOo project managment won't change in such a way to facilitate greater cooperation with the Neo/J effort.

Moreover, when 2.0 is finalized (or 2.0.1, which will fix most of the critical bugs that were missed in 2.0 Smile), Patrick and Ed will sit down and spend a couple of months adapting the Neo/J part of the code to "fit on top of" OOo 2.0. (OOo has its own internal cross-platform framework, vcl, which sits between the general application code and the platform/OS. Moving OOo to a new OS/platform "basically" requires porting/reimplementing only the vcl for the new platform. Neo/J essentially is the native Mac OS X implementation of vcl, so it just drops right on to whatever version of OOo is underneath--less any changes Sun's engineers have made to vcl in the new version. This is of course a fairly massive oversimplification of all the work Patrick and Ed and the X11 porters have done but nevertheless a workable explanation for the non-technical among us.)

Sardisson:

Thanks for that candid well-defined explanation! THAT's the press release that OpenOffice should've sent out!

Thanks!

True, but information has a tendency to move beyonds anyone's control. Good lessons for next time, I should say.

I understand where it came from: that page you made is the *only* indication of how Mac OOo is doing and where it is going in the entire OOo website. So no wonder it get quoted by people starved for info. And then the game of chinese whispers starts..

Actually, Patrick does take checks, but prefers PayPal...

Okay, I'll check this out! Ed & Pat deserve some dues from all who use NeoOffice. Some (most?) people don't appreciate selfless devotion in sweat freebies for beans these days it seems!
