PostPosted: Mon Apr 11, 2005 3:52 pm    Post subject: neoj freezing up with patch 1

I'm getting a frequent freezing of neoJ with the new patch when working with text and spreadsheet documents.

Symptoms are spinning beach ball and a non responding neoj that never comes back. Runs fine after force quitting, but only for a while. Is there a "freeze" log file somewhere to post?

Thanks

Ken

Have you tried rebooting your machine? We have found that Mac OS X does not always handling application upgrades very well.

Then though only thing to do is to do the following the next time that Neo/J hangs:

1. Open the /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor application.
2. Take a "sample" of the Neo/J process while it is hung.
3. File a bug in Bugzilla and attach the sample that you collected in step 2.

Current 1.1.5 plan is here:

http://development.openoffice.org/releases/OpenOffice_org_1_x.html

And it says:

"February/March 2005: OpenOffice.org 1.1.5 bugfix release ?

* close of tree : 2005/01/27 (delayed, still open )
* release build: Mid February (delayed )
* release of 1.1.5: 2nd Quarter 2005"

They are also still committing, integrating, and QA-ing 645-based workspaces, so stuff is still happening.

Just to clarify part 2) above, highlight the NeoOffice process in the list in the main window of Activity Monitor, then "Inspect" it (click the i button in the toolbar, or press command-I) and press the "Sample" button in the bottom left of the Inspector pane. It'll take about 10 to 15 sec to run the sample. Once finished, save the results as a file to e.g. your desktop for submission in Bugzilla.

Obviously Pat knows more about his app than anybody, so if this is way off base than just ignore since this is a 'windoze-based' app and the following may not even be in the ballpark but a common cure for Mac apps acting up is to find related preferences files to the app and move them out of where they are now to say, the Desktop and re-launch the app. The app will recreate the pref file(s) in the right spot again. If that doesn't work or has no effect, you can put those moved pref file(s) back where they were and when the it asks you if you want to replace the new one with the same name already there (if, in fact, the pref file was recreated), choose 'yes'. The only reason I bring this up is that rebooting, a cure that when all else fails on a Mac almost always works for me, won't get rid of those files automatigically.

I've never done something like 'sampling' before but thanks for the info on step 2.

On second thought, nevermind. I completely ignored the fact that in your case, NOJ was launching successfully initially and then quitting later... Caches, if any, maybe?

Instead, is it possible to bug Apple to update their mirror at http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/productivity_tools/neoofficej.html? They still at Neo/J 1.1 Beta.

Sorry, that was an omission on my part in all of the excitement (and because the other Apple listing, Mac Products Guide, only accepts "released" products). I'll fix that.

3-5 business days and Apple should have 1.1 RC Smile

1.1rc up at Apple now Smile And the listing that Oscar submitted for UNESCO has finally appeared (never any confirmation email, though)!

Well, nobody ever said the UN route was fast. But at least it works...

OK posted a couple of samples. I think it is caused by using the scroll wheel.

Patrick, what does the "movability" mean in relation to patches? The patch installers are still only going to look in /Applications, right?

(Basically, how much of this wiki page still applies?)

"Movability" means that if you rename or move the /Applications/NeoOfficeJ.app folder, Neo/J might actually be able to adjust your user preferences to match the new location.

However, this process isn't perfect so Neo/J will still install in the /Applications/NeoOfficeJ.app folder. In other words, there is no change in the installer.
