As many of you are aware, development of Neo/J is a hobby of mine and I make my living doing consulting work unrelated to Neo/J.

Well, I have spent the last six months working 50 - 60 hours a week on Neo/J and while I have been able to stretch the one large donation and many small donations, they are not enough for me to continue at working on this software full time.

I will probably put out another Neo/J 1.1 RC patch this week and then, after that, I will be reducing my time spent on Neo/J signficantly (e.g. less than 5 hours a week) so that I can pursue paid work.

I certainly understand (although I don't think I ever realized you were working overtime on Neo/J the whole time!); you deserve a break (and, well, income, too Wink)

And thanks for all of your hard work the past few years, and especially the past 6 months - !ألف شكر

(so cool to have RTL in Neo/J!)

Smokey

Totally understandable. The entire OS X community owes you a major thanks for all the hard and amazing work you've done thusfar, and I hope once 1.1 goes final, some company or individual out there will recognize the value in scooping you up and paying you to continue your great work...

Thanks again, Patrick.

Patrick, we can do nothing but thank you for all the hard work and hope that you will soon earn so much $$ that you can retire and to pursue your (and our) hobby at leisure.

Best wishes, and thanks again,
Oscar

Better to take a break than getting exhausted and broke by the workload... Keep the health and economy going, first things first Smile

I'm sorry that I (being a student and a father) and other enthusiastic Neo/J fans and hangarounds can't contribute more on the financing, but I'll buy a lottery ticket with Neo/J in mind...

Thank you for your great work!

Pat,

If you were putting in that kind of time with your free hours, you're long overdue for a break.

Not sure about you, but for me, it's very frustrating having to choose between making a living in dronesville when I would really like to be be doing something I'm passinate about, like this project. Problem is, I'm too much of a coward and paranoid to say "the hell, with it all", and start over. The family to support and all that good responsible stuff...

Thanks for your herculean efforts and the rest of the NOJ "Team's" efforts. It's never easy trying to slay Goliath (I think he's the big one) (i.e. billy) Why Sun nor Apple would get behind your work is beyond me, but I guess it has something to do with this symbol, $.

Patrick,

I can only second the other's statements.

Thank you *very* much for the enormous amount of time you've spent on NeoOffice/J.

Live your "other life" now with a clear conscience. May be some guys will show up and help to fill up the gap of your reduced time for NeoOffice/J.

Thomas and the others out here:

I'm an old timer when it comes to programming and I've found Google can be your friend, but I'm looking for a good programming guide/sample code for Carbon/Java. I'm looking to assist with the File Open/Save dialog problem that folks are complaingin about (although I do like the Windows like dialog box as it is a 'standard' through the UNIX/Windows world.)

Since I don't have much time to spend on Neo/J right now (and most of the time I am not using Mac OS X) I could really use some help. Specifically, if anyone can help in the following two areas, it will make it much easier for me to prepare and release a Neo/J 1.1 final release in the next month or so:

Evaluate and close bugs

Right now, there are more than a dozen unconfirmed bugs in Bugzilla. Most of these bugs don't have enough information to figure out whether they are really bugs or not. In other words, someone needs to ask the bug submitter for more information or help get to point where the bug can be easily reproduced.

I suspect that after some discussion with the submitter, you will find that many bugs are really support questions, OpenOffice.org bugs, or due to the Mac OS X 10.3.9 upgrade Java problem. Please close these bugs as it will help me more easily figure out what, if anything, I need to fix for the Neo/J 1.1 final release.

If you find that it is a real bug (particularly crashing bugs), please mark it as assigned and assign it to Ed or I. Ed and I may still close it if it is an OpenOffice.org bug, but at least we will know that you have determined that the bug is real. Assign it to Ed if it is a bug in the Aqua menus or Tiger (I don't have a machine that I can run Tiger on yet). For everything else, assign it to me.

Fix bugs

A couple of people have mentioned that they might try to build Neo/J and work on it. If you can get Neo/J build, it would be really helpful if you could try to debug and fix any Neo/J bugs. This may sound like boring work, but it will really help you understand the Neo/J code. Without that understanding, you will find it extremely hard to do anything interesting like adding Aqua controls or dialogs.

Apologies, I slacked on BZ while I ground away at the spotlight stuff. I'll get back on it tomorrow.

Mostly the bugs that are there in UNCO are waiting on more info from the submitter (except for a few really old bugs that I'm not sure what's going on with), so you haven't really missed anything, Ed...and NeoLight was an important thing to have ready on Friday Smile
