First you need to create a vertical text input block. OOo (and Neo/J) don't have a button or menu item that switches you to veritcal input. Instead, you need to click on the "Show Draw Functions" icon in the toolbar that runs vertically in the left side of the document.
This will cause a floating window to appear. Click on the big "T" that is rotated 90 degrees and then use the mouse to draw a box in the document. Start typing and the text inside the box will be vertical.
Here is where OOo is a bit unintuitive. After you type more than one line of text, highlight all of the text and then press the "Format: Paragraph" icon in the toolbar running across the top of the document. In the dialog that appears, click on the "Alignment" tab and select "Right-to-left" for the "Text Direction" property. Continue typing.

Hello Patrick,
I had a similar problem and almost solved it (changed text direction 90°). But now I can't align the text (length varies from column to column) properly between top and bottom margin.
What is the solution?
