I noticed that the print dialog and the Tools->Options dialog boxes appear blank. As such they can't be modified. When I mouse-over, it is obvious that there's something there and items are clickable, but nothing visually apparent. I'm using NO 2.1, with patch, on a MacPro Quad.

A MacPro Quad - lucky you Smile.

Can you tell us which OS version and Java version you have? Also, it might help just to reboot.

I've never heard of this problem, so I hope it is just a fluke.

Best wishes,
Oscar

There's another thread around here about this (or an issue like this) that I can't find now.

IIRC, that poster resolved the problem by starting with a fresh set of prefs....

Seems like I saw a similar report here not long ago, but I don't have time to look for it right now.

If the reboot doesn't help, trying pulling Neo's preferences file (~/library/Preferences/NeoOffice 2.1 where "~" is your home folder) out of it's location and onto the desktop. Then restart Neo.

If that fixes it, your preferences are corrupt. If you have customized autotexts, toolbars, key combinations, templates, or etc. that you want to salvage from the old (corrupt) preferences folder, you will need to work through a process to gradually add those back to the new preferences file, repeatedly checking to see if those "additions" cause the problem too recur. I had to do the same thing several months ago, and spelled out my process in post here. I don't have time to look for it, but you could try searching these forums for a post by me in 2006 that includes the word "preferences."

The thread describing the process used by Lorinda can be found here.

I tried what Lorinda suggests, deleted my pref file, and I still have the blank dialogs & preferences.
As far as I can remember, they were OK before I updated the suite.
Other Java stuff is somehow broken on my iMac, so Neo might just be another victim of my specific machine (3 months old, brand new, which hurts).

For instance, Limewire refuses to launch further than a blank startup dialog box on which I can't click yes or no or whatever.
My online photo lab's image upload routine also doesn't work in Firefox (relies on Java).
And now, NeoOffice goes "poof" after the update to 2.1
Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

blank preferences window

no OK/Cancel buttons at the bottom

Apart from reinstalling my Mac (sounds annoyingly familiar, being a switcher), what can I do?

So you are using the French localisation. Are you using Shapeshifter by any chance? Do you know what version of java you have?

Most likely, that is the case. All of the Aqua buttons are drawn using Java. So if Java is horked, so will NeoOffice.

OK, now I know what it is. No, I'm not using it. It's a bare OS X in all its hosed-Java glory.
Java version seems to be 1.3.1_16 Standard Edition. Java preferences pane is blank too.

OK, that will do it. Your Java should be 1.5.0.9 or something. Actually, I am surprised you see Java 1.3, because you have a Mac Pro (Intel). I thought In tel Mac only came with 1.4 and higher and 1.3 was left on PowerMacs..

I suggest you install the latest Java updates from Apple (you may have to search around their webpage). Also, look in the /applications/utilities folder and set your Java plugin to 1.5 (or at least 1.4).

Good luck,
Oscar

NeoOffice requires Java 1.4.2 or 1.5.0.

As Oscar suggested, you should download and install the latest Java update :
