It appears as though the newest version of Neooffice is not nearly as Arabic friendly as previous versions. It no longer connects the characters, unless I manually go in and change the font to Geeza Pro every time I open a document. There is no way of changing the base font for spreadsheets. It constantly uses Tahoma font. Is there a way to get 2.2.3 back until either this all gets fixed, or maybe just stop updating?

thanks

Sorry, but no. If something is broken, please file a bug in Bugzilla and attach a sample document for us.

Due to our limited funding, we can allow afford to support the latest release and, to be blunt, your bug will not get fixed until you or someone else files a bug in Bugzilla and we can reproduce that bug.

Thank you for filing a bug.

For anyone having similar problems with Arabic in Calc, I have posted a workaround in bug 3149 that should stop the use of the fonts that have bad Arabic layout.

I would suggest following the wiki instructions for checking for corrupt preferences. I'm wondering if there's a corruption in the settings for Complex Text Layout.

I cannot reproduce the errors you have reported, but:
    a) I may not be doing exactly what you are, and
    b) I know nothing about Arabic. Sad

If it checking for corrupt preferences does not solve the issue, please do file a report in Bugzilla. Please spell out the exact steps needed to reproduce it. Also, please include screen shots of what the Arabic should look like and what it looks like when it is wrong.

We do have one volunteer (that I know of) who speaks and reads Arabic, but he is not available this month. Nevertheless, we'll do the best we can to help you.

Lorinda

Edit: Patrick beat me to it!

The cause is not corrupt preferences. Instead, the cause is a Microsoft Office font. One of the fonts installed by Office claims that it supports Arabic but when that font is used, only ending glyph forms of each character are returned. No medial or beginning glyph forms are returned.

To fix this, I have to add code to detect such a font and, if such a font is being used, force font fallback using Geeza Pro.

Lorinda, the bug has already been filed, and Patrick can reproduce this issue:

http://bugzilla.neooffice.org/bug.php?op=show&bugid=3149

so it is not caused by corrupt preferences…

Edit: Patrick beats me to it Smile

FYI. There is a test patch with a fix for this bug in bug 3149. Just go to that bug and copy and paste the test patch URL in my last post into your browser.

It seems like Patrick has already fixed the underlying bug (why Apple didn't fix this at the API level long ago is beyond me....), but just for the record:

That's not exactly true; you simply have to edit the correct style (the Default style), save a new template with that change, and set that template to be the default Calc template. See Editing Default Styles and Using Templates in the wiki for more info.
