noticing the buttons for font color and background color behave differently when clicked. clicking anywhere on the bgcolor button brings up a floating window to choose a color. for the font color this only happens when you click on the down arrow on the right side of the button. is it possible to standardize this? or is it an Oo.org issue?

I think this is by design in OOo. When mousing over the font color and highlight buttons, it's interesting to note that they actually are drawn as a "pair" of buttons; there is a boundary between the popdown menu and the rest of the button. The left half applies the last used color, the right half triggers the popup to change the color that the left button applies.

The font background, however, is drawn as one button and does not have this boundary. That's why the entire button acts as a popup menu. It doesn't seem to have an "apply last" option.
