ok, so long story to follow. short version, stuff happened i wasn't expecting.

ok, so i download alpha 1, install, run, enjoy. no patches applied.

download alpha 2, rename alpha 1 'old neostuff', install alpha 2. download patch 2 with its spiffy installer (which rocks the cas-bah, btw) install.

don't touch alpha 1, play with alpha 2, but not much (did confirm alpha 2 said patch 2)

today i download patch 3. install. start up alpha 2. get a blank pop up window for about ten seconds, then the prog crashes, get apple's "would you like to send feedback to apple" message.

start up alpha 1. i get a pop up with words (same size so i assume same pop up) it says there is another person using it (who is me) and do i really really truly honestly want to continue. i say yes.

the aqua menu shows up, i check the about, it says alpha 2, patch 3. start up is prompt and all works well.

i scratch my head. (actually i do this part a lot through this)

so i start up alpha 2.

no pop up. it is slower to respond, takes a while for things to draw. otherwise seems fine. menus not as responsive as alpha 1.

quit, start up alpha 1 to confirm i am not losing it.

well, losing it with respect to this, other arguments can go into the random section of the forum.

anyway. to sum up.

1. the patch installer seems to have installed to two separate installations of Neo/J despite one being of different name.

2. the patched alpha 1 seems snappier than the patched alpha 2.

3. i have not a clue if this is relavent to anything, just figured i'd report it. i can, of course, make a grand attempt to repeat this if needed.

ok, all done.

I think I know what is happening. I tried to make the Neo/J patch installer "smart" and upgrade any Neo/J installation greater than or equal to 1.1 Alpha 1 patch 6. As a result, the installer upgraded both your Alpha 1 and Alpha 2 installations so that both have "1.1 Alpha 2" as their version in their respective Info.plist files.

So, from Mac OS X's perspective, you have two copies of the same application installed. Sad

see that's the thing, though, i didn't install any alpha 1 patches... (that's why i downloaded the alpha 2, fresh start)

then again, not many people will do this. so probably a non-issue =D

I found the bug in my patch installer script that allows upgrade of a patchless 1.1 Alpha 1 installation. Sad

I'll include the fix any future patch installers.
