I was editing a large Writer document, and I noticed that the search/replace window sometimes vanishes and sometimes comes back. It might be connected to the table windows, as I was searching through tables.

I think what happens is that after I click on somewhere, the search window is pushed backward, and then later it somehow remembers it needs to be in front. I kept using command-f to get it back, even though I hadn't closed it.

I'm sorry if this description seems vague..

I see this too.

In NeoOffice 3.2.1 the Find & Replace (Edit::Find & Replace) window and the Fields (Insert::Cross-reference…) window, lose focus when you click on the main writer window, but stay floating in front of it.

In NeoOffice 3.3 Beta (both 1&2) when clicking on the writer window it is brought to the front and sits on top of the Find & Replace and Fields windows.

I can reproduce this bug. I will investigate.

What I noticed is that the bug occurs with non-utility floating windows (floating windows with a normal size titlebar) but not with true utility windows (floating windows with the thinner titlebar).

Yes, that is correct. Also the ones with thin title bars seem to go on top of the ones with full size title bars, which should probably be the other way around (search should be on top of table controls).

Good hunting and thanks for looking into it!

Not true. True utility windows (the thin titlebar windows) always float above all non-modal full-size titlebar windows. On Mac OS X, only modal dialogs such as the open and save dialogs are displayed above true utility windows.

Who knows. Apple decides the window levels that different types of windows occupy. All we can do is try to assign the most reasonable native window type based on the generic window functionality hints that the OpenOffice.org code provides.

I think that I have fixed this bug and in the following test patch, all floating windows with thick titlebars should behave like they did in NeoOffice 3.2.1 and remain in front of the document window they are attached to.

Can you install the following test patch and tell us if the bug is fixed for you?:

Not yet. If I click on the document with a Search window active, it still disappears behind the document.

I also noticed that they are separate-but-connected windows when I had two documents open. I was searching in doc1, then used command-` to go to doc2. I still had the search window on top after that. But when I then hit command-w to close doc2. NeoOffice then asked if I should save changes in doc1 instead of closing doc2 that I was looking at.

I cannot reproduce either of the above on my machine so 2 questions:

1. Which Mac OS X version are you using?

2. When you have 2 documents open, is the Find and Replace window open for both or only 1?

3. Are both documents Writer documents or some other document type?

Sad

I am using 10.6.8, 1 find & replace window for document 1, and both are writer documents.

Since neither fix worked for me, could it be that the test patch is somehow not patching properly?

You were right. I had forgotten to add the file with the fix in it back into the patch list and I have corrected that in the following test patch.

This bug seems fixed for me Smile. Search now stays in front when I click on the document window.

Addendum: Also, if I now use command-w on the search window, my document closes like it should (don't know if that was different before, but it works for me).
