NeoOffice/J Performance Patch Ready for Testing
Posted by pluby on Sunday, September 25 @ 13:42:02 CDT
NeoOffice Update (November 18, 2005) - NeoOffice/J "Patch-3-With-Java-1.4.x-Update-2" has been posted. This patch replaces all of the Performance Test Patches. So if you have downloaded one of the Performance Test Patches, please download and install "Patch-3-With-Java-1.4.x-Update-2" from the NeoOffice/J patch download page. After three months of hard work, I have finished upgrading NeoOffice/J 1.1 to use Java 1.4.x. Although this upgrade does not change the look and feel of NeoOffice/J, testers should notice significant performance improvements and enhancements such as:
  • Startup - Most testers should see at least a 50% reduction in time before the Neo/J splash screen appears.
  • Drawing - Neo/J 1.1 used a CPU and memory intensive buffering process to draw text, shapes, and images. This buffering process was needed because there were many drawing bugs in Apple's Java 1.3.1. Apple fixed these bugs in Java 1.4.x so this buffering process has been removed. Most testers should see faster drawing within their documents. In particular, scrolling and display of full screen presentations is now significantly faster.
  • Reduced Memory Usage - Due to some bugs in Apple's Java 1.3.1, Neo/J required a minimum of 512 megabytes of memory to support printing. Apple has fixed these bugs in Java 1.4.x so the minimum memory has been reduced by 256 megabytes.
  • Enhanced Font Support - Since Java 1.3.1 uses Apple's Carbon APIs, Neo/J 1.1 contained many of the font problems that appeared in Carbon applications running on Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). Java 1.4.x uses Apple's Cocoa APIs so the patch includes the more reliable font support available to all Cocoa applications.
  • EPS Image Printing Support - This patch adds the ability to print EPS images. While neither Neo/J nor OpenOffice.org will display EPS images on the screen, OpenOffice.org has always supported printing such images and now Neo/J does as well.
  • Enhanced Copy and Paste Support - Upon quitting Neo/J 1.1, any Neo/J data copied to the clipboard would be removed from the clipboard. In this patch, such copied data will remain on the clipboard even after quitting Neo/J.
If you want to help test the performance test patch, download and install the patch from http://www.planamesa.com/neojava/downloads/patches/NeoOfficeJ-1.1-Performance_Test_Patch-1.10.dmg and report any bugs that you find in Bugzilla. Warning! This patch is intended for testers and I expect that there will be bugs. Some bugs may cause Neo/J to crash so if you need to use Neo/J for critical work, please don't install the patch. If you install the performance test patch, be sure to save your work often. If for some reason you want to uninstall the performance patch, you can download and install http://www.planamesa.com/neojava/downloads/patches/NeoOfficeJ-1.1-Patch-1.dmg. This patch will restore your Neo/J installation to the officially released Neo/J 1.1. I would like to thank all of the people who have donated to Neo/J. Without their donations, this performance test patch would not have been possible.

Firsts tests is OK. For speed at startup, it's real.

here's my results on a 1GHz G4 iMac with 768M running Tiger:
restart and then
Neo/J 1.1:
30 seconds to splash, 42 seconds to empty document
installed patch, ran Neo/J and restarted.
with patcth:
12 seconds to splash, 41 seconds to empty document
interesingly, the progress bar on the splash was stalled under the first 'f' in Office until the 33rd second. I think something isn't quite as it should be. Is there some diagnostic I can run?

Question: Does it make sense/would it be useful for someone running MacOS X 10.3.9 to install and test this patch?

I just got wind of this today on the OO site.
Downloaded and tried it. Nothing short of amazing.
I use NeoOfficeJ all the time for my office suite requirements and it is the only suite on my powerbook.
This patch gives it the speed of a native application. Scrolling through large docs is very fast, menus are instant (no sub-second delay anymore.)

Well done.
I will be contributed hard cold cash to neooffice to say thanks.
Keep up the good work.

BTW, what's the story with 2.0 ? I read an announcement from the OO team that said they will do a native port. Are you involved ?? If not, why not ?

I attempted to install patch 1.9, but received a message "You cannot install this software on this volume. A NeoOffice 1.1 could not be found in this volume's / Applications folder."

I have 1.1 installed, I think. I have been using it.
Should I have installed an earlier patch?

I am just starting to use NeoOffice and like it, but I am new at it.

I kept getting a crash (font problem) when launching NeoOffice; this patch fixed it.
