NeoOffice/J Receives $25,000 Donation
Posted by pluby on Thursday, August 04 @ 12:11:20 CDT
NeoOffice A very generous individual has stepped forward and given a US$25,000 donation to NeoOffice/J. This much needed donation plus the many small donations received over the last few months provides enough funds for me to work full time on upgrading NeoOffice/J to use Java 1.4. Upgrading NeoOffice/J to Java 1.4 is one of the critical tasks that must be done in order for NeoOffice/J to run on Apple's upcoming Intel-based machines. With this donation, one of the three critical tasks for creating a Mac Intel verison of NeoOffice/J is now fully funded. Not only do I want to thank our generous donor, but I would also like to thank the hundreds of people who have donated to NeoOffice/J. The many small donations that NeoOffice/J has received are important and, without them, working full time on NeoOffice/J would not be possible.

I also would like to extend my thanks to all of the individuals who have donated. Originally I had expected only to find enough to cover our infrastructure costs, but thankfully there has been enough to allow Patrick to work full time on this project.
For those who may not be aware of the ongoing stuff in the dev forums, it should be known that neither NeoOffice/J nor OpenOffice.org Mac OS X (X11) can run on Mactel machines at present. Both embed Java virtual machines. Due to limitations in Rosetta (Apple's Mactel PowerPC emulation technology) it will not be possible for PowerPC applications to embed Java virtual machines.
Java 1.3.1, on which we currently depend, will not be available for Mactel machines.
It is very great news to hear that with this help we may be able to get things in place for the Mactel transition. Hopefully we'll be able to get something running by the time the first Mactel machines are available to the general public.

Wow...! I haven't read the trinity front page in a while...this is fantastic news! Alf shukr to the very generous individual for the tremendous donation--and as always, thanks to all the donors, large and small, who continue to keep food on the table for Patrick when he works full-time on Neo/J--from the NeoOffice user commnutiy!

Can't wait for Neo/J 1.2 Alpha!

That's fantastic guys. A big thanks goes out to all the donors. This is something that will be good for OpenOffice as a whole too. NeoOffice makes my job of promoting OpenOffice that much easier.
