OpenOffice 2.0 (didn't try the earlier version) does not work on MacOS X if using UFS filesystem from what I can tell. Perhaps this is well known, but I was unaware of it.

This is a known issue and is being worked on by the MacOSX porting team. There is an issue at the OpenOffice.org IssueZilla for this.
