I put out this call in the GUI topic thread, bit it will get lost there in other traffic , so I started a new topic:
Can anyone help with Tango icons? I have downloaded sets from the Tango project page, and from kde-look.org. What I get is a promising-looking folder with hundreds of "icons", but in fact the majority of them are 4Kb aliases. I have about 150 *real* icons, the rest are just aliases. Has anyone got around this? They are nice., so I'd like to see how far I can get to building a NeoOffice set with them.

I answered my own question. The reason they are aliases is because they are aliases to one or other of the real icons. Presumably the theme installer doubles up by using some icons for a number of purposes, as we do manually when making sets for Neo Iconer.
So there seem to be a total of 173 icons in the current set of Tango, but even some of those are duplicates, so there may be less than 100. Disappointing. Hopefully they will make good progress, because there seem to be a number of keen people contributing.
I'll get to work on the ones we have. I'd also love to get hold of the Oxygen [KDE 4] icons,
