Neo/J too slow to facilate testing on my 400 MHz iMac

Although I've tried to do my part in testing Neo/J, I find that when I really need to to critical work, I go back to OO x11 because of the performance. Most recent example is my family Christmas letter. I thought this would be a good test of patch 11 because I was using columns and images in frames.

I was somewhat encouraged in the intermediate patches because of the work you apparently did in the threading/notification. Unfort. that had to be backed out.

I'd like to be of more help and submitting even more bug reports but until I get a new Mac, I use Neo/J only on a few exploratory issues.

I had some time today so I decided to try overriding the Java 1.3.1 locking mechanism. After a few hours work, I was able to override the locks without causing NeoJ to either hang or crash.

With this change, Jim's floor plan document renders in only 3 seconds instead of 10 seconds. Start up time and other painting operations are also similarly faster. This is a huge performance improvement that seems too good to be true (like winning the lottery) so I won't be surprised if some crashes or other problems surface.

But if you want to try it out, I have posted a "patch-12-experimental" patch here:

I installed p12x (experimental) on 10.3.2. I got a crash when I tried to load a spreadsheet. I get a very similar crash in plain patch-12.

I have loaded the new experiment patch12 and the performance improvement is HUGE!

NeoOffice/J started with no problems...No crashes yet!
Here is what I have tried:

1. Open 4 different presentations with no problems.
2. Open a 5 sheet spreadsheet that is huge. (3084 Rows with calculations)...Again very fast and no problems!

The only test that I have done that seemed very slow still was the response time to end slide show and the time it takes to transition between slides.

So far thumbs up here!

The first line in this crash clearly points to a bug in my fix for bug #42. This function is only about 10 lines of C code so it is likely that some variable is getting set to a value that I don't expect.

Can you send me a document that causes the crash? This will help me find where the problem is.

Testing patch 12 X on 10.3.2 with 400 MHz iMac.

Startup time much faster (45 seconds). Performance on redraws and scrolling much faster.

Loaded and printed a few documents with images OK.

Appears to be a regression in printing the "Basementplan" document where the lines are thicker than they should be and the text on the dimension lines runs together.

Undo in drawings works correctly.

Switching font problem on second page (from pricing spreadsheet I sent you) fixed but printed font appears more "BOLD" than it should be and text runs together vs. on-screen appearance.

Background CPU usage now less than 1% (occasionally goes up to 2% but usually around .4%)

Seems excellent so far except for those 2 things.

Jim,

Are the two printing problems that you describe also in the regular "patch-12" as well?

If so, it would seem likely that the two problems are (hopefully) related to your font printing bug instead of the performance enhancement.

Thanks for the sample files. I found the cause of the crashing and it was do to my incorrect reverse engineering of the X11 code.

I still need to look at Jim's two printing issues. Once I get those fixed (probably tomorrow), I will post an updated patch.

Installed patch 12 on top of patch 12 Exp. Don't know if this is acceptable practice or not.

Still had the problem with thicher, jaggier lines on basement plan document and overly bold print on pricing spreadsheet.
