A conversion from NeoOffice to word does not handle graphics well. A conversion from NeoOffice to pdf works perfectly (so far for me) including all graphics. Why not work on a conversion from pdf into NeoOffice instead of all the other conversions that clients might want?
There is probably a good reason this capability has not been developed, maybe an Adobe licence problem. Would appreciate it if somebody could tell me since it seems so obvious this user that it would be easier than working on 20 other conversions.
Right, a PDF is no longer a document full of "text" but rather a collection of lines and curves--it's closer to EPS than to text, since it's another page description format.
At one time someone over at OOoForum.org was exploring the possibility of a PDF import filter for Impress, but I know he had some difficulties related to the nature of the file (not licensing, since PDF is an open and freely-licenseable format) and I haven't checked in on the progress lately....

The above are correct. .PDF is a display format meant to provide a 100% visual duplication. In many cases there is NO user editable text in the document (like a FAX). Other cases the graphic image has attached text data to allow searching.
Smokey is right that the .PDF file is actually a .EPS file that contains the image commands, .EPS formatting commands and blocks of text to be displayed. [tech details follows: An .EPS file is actually a text file that is full of commands, images and text to be displayed. Try looking at .EPS or .PDF in an ACSII text editing tool. ]
The end result is that .PDF files are NOT meant to be text editing documents. They are Output/Print documents.
I create/use .PDF files every day and they are not meant to be document source documents. I hope this explains why .PDF files are not good files to import text data from.
OpenDocument Format is the new Format that allows easy access to the Formatting/Images/and Text is a standardize format (in XML data format).
