My solution was to bring all of the files Ooo2.0.2 needs local. Easy as plugging a server disk into a Firewire port. But there is only the one Macintosh in the PC sea...
This is a sad situation.

It is a permissions problem, if i recall right. There must be a simple way to arbitrate or filter permissions. You can always, ahem, log in as root.
Not at the present moment. However, there is a sun rising on the horizion on this issue as someone has taken up the issue at OpenOffice and is working on it. We may see progress in the next few weeks on a solution.

The same problem happens if you want to use Samba to access CFS files over the network. But the good news is that the same Samba will share files out over that network and you can impose selective user-level access on them.
This is because the same issue affects any file acess across a network. The 'simple' solution is to remove SAL_FILE_LOCKING, but this allows more than one user to access a networked file at a time. This is, of course, no good if you want one and only one user to access a particular file at a time.

I decided to go to the OpenOffice.org IssueZilla and look up the number of issues associated with File Locking and found the following:
29284. This discusses the use of SAL_FILE_LOCKING and actually advises to use it. However, this does not work with Samba/AFP/NFS with MacOSX.
62229. Cannot access any resources via AFP. This also contains a possible fix.
55843. Cannot access files through symbolic link. I think this issue is fixed with a recent change as proposed by Pavel Janik.
61865. Incorporation of Patrick's donated code into the OpenOffice.org 2.0.x baseline. This allows the first user of a networked file to place a read-only lock on the file. I think this code is now being worked into the SRC680 master work space (which is used for further OpenOffice.org 2.0 work) in another (62229) issue.
In any case, this is a well known and very old problem with OpenOffice.org being able to access files across any networked protocol. Hopefully the fix proposed in 62229 will be a proper one.
