Hmm, given Samwise's comment, perhaps some of your RAM has gone bad?

Good catch samwise!
http://support.apple.com/specs/imac/iMac_Early_2006.html
Who would swap out the 512 and put in a bogus 256! That's lame, if true. Since its a single Sodimm, I don't think only half can be reported as bad can it? If not. someone intentionally or not snookered you. Maybe call Apple support and complain that their is only 256MB RAM in there or that half doesn't work/isn't reported in Apple Profiler/About this Mac and maybe they will send you a new 512MB stick. Worth a try... |

Intel-based Minis were introduced on February 28, 2006. Even if he got one of the very first Intel Minis, he's still under warranty for a few days
Sometimes, when a RAM module is defective, System Profiler only reports half of the actual RAM capacity. |

I have been very pleased with NeoOffice's launch speed and operating speed for several months- it is much improved. I had trouble some months back with really, really slow menu response (not dissimilar to a post earlier in this thread) but pluby had the fix out in 24 hours or less. Amazing! I also closed out a bunch of widgets as they seem to eat a lot of CPU cycles even when idle. After installing patch 13 this morning, launching NeoOffice seemed faster than usual.
I am using an iBook with 1.33gHz CPU and 1 GB RAM, with 10.4.8. FWIW after installing the most recent Apple updates:
[tim ~]$ java -version
java version "1.5.0_07"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_07-164) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_07-87, mixed mode, sharing)
I find NeoOffice fast enough that I use it for hours a day as my primary word processor and only spreadsheet. My advice would be (1) run 10.4 or at least make sure you've got that most recent Java versions that Apple has released (use Software Update); (2) make sure you've got at least 1 GB RAM; (3) turn off any widgets you don't absolutely need. |

I don't think we have Widgets in our list of perf-killers on the wiki; I should add that....

I originated this thread and I shall now report.
I have just upgraded to Apple's OS X 10.4 and did a complete software update to the latest Apple release of Java. Readers might remember that I typically waited on my 1GHz G4 with 1.5G of system RAM for three minutes to start up any NeoOffice application using OS X 10.3.9.
The new Java environment offers a significant improvement in Neo Office 2.0 (not the latest version, 2.1) It takes one minute to start the application and every application runs faster, though I do have to say that the Open Office that runs on Microsoft Windows XP does run faster—but not much.
I also have a pretty old Mac but the applications do run acceptibly fast; one could use an older desktop Macintosh as a "secretary's workstation" instead of being required to give that person the latest hardware.
So Apple's Tiger OS (10.4) wth the latest Java release will work well as a platform for Neo Office as it stands today. I shall be upgrading my application suite in the next few days. |
