Thanks to everyone for the good thoughts. I'm doing much better, although I've had a little unsteadiness today if I've turned too quickly.
It looks like this time it was not labyrinthitis, but Benign Proxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). The symptoms are nearly undistiguishable, and both affect the inner ear, but the causes are different. BPPV is also known as "ear rocks" because it's caused by little clumps of minerals that break off from where they are supposed to be in the inner ear and move to where they aren't supposed to be. So the doctor and the occupational therapist manipulated my head around in all sorts of odd ways to encourage the rocks to go back to where they belong, and that seems to have helped considerably.
With labyrinthitis, on the other hand, there's not much to do but take some pills that might or might not ease the symptoms and wait till the virus has run its course.
I realized belatedly that I didn't clarify the funeral comment that had K-9 stumped. I'm a pastor, so the funeral was work related, and I was behind in getting ready for it due to my spell of vertigo.

I hope your ear rocks are rocked back to sleep, Lorinda. A few years ago I experienced permanent viral damage to some of my semicircular canals (I always feel like that should be on Mars, not in my ears...) and the specialist at the time told me not to worry, because the brain is very adaptable and adjusts itself over time to the new data it's getting. He was right, I'm quite fine these days, no more 'turning upside down' whilst driving, thank goodness - so be patient with your ears!

not being funny in way; but that may be where they get the expression 'rocks in your head'.
I never heard of such stuff. Boy that is interesting. Hope things get better soon. |

My mom has had periodic BPPV episodes for several years now, and both she and my dad have great fun joking about the rocks in her head. She's been taught some exercises to use when the spells occur, and those have generally helped her, especially if she catches it early.
padmavyuha, I was just reading about therapy for "vestibular disorders," and it described "brain retraining" exercises for those cases (like yours) when the damage is permanent. The brain is an amazing organ! I also have a mild case of a rare but mostly nuisancy eye disease that causes floaters and other visual effects. Over time my has brain learned to filter those things out (and relearns whenever it flares up again or things shift), so that I generally only see them when I'm thinking about it.
