I'm trying to use a file saved on the new excel file format. To whom should I send the file for evaluation... It's confidential information, so I don't want to post it in the forum... FYI: the xlsx has many macros. |

Actually, the xlsx import and export filters are made by external groups and are not worked on by NeoOffice developers. So if you send them to the NeoOffice developers, they will have forward them to the filter makers.
Furthermore, the filters are incomplete and therefore will not convert an MS XML document perfectly (far from it).
Best wishes,

Unfortunately, the only application that can reliably render the new Microsoft Office .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx file formats is Microsoft Office 2007 or 2008. The same is true for any VBA macros.
While users can extract the rough content from the new Office file formats using NeoOffice, in most cases there will be significant loss of formatting when opening or saving in those file formats.
By using the .xlsx file fromat and Excel VBA macros, you really are limiting yourself to Microsoft Office 2007 or 2008.
If you really want to make your files usable in NeoOffice or OpenOffice.org, I suggest that you save in the older .xls format which may the reduce the loss of formatting. You will also need to test your VBA thoroughly in NeoOffice to ensure that you are not getting an errors as NeoOffice only supports the subset of VBA commands that match NeoOffice's "OpenOffice.org Basic" macro language.

So am I correct in assuming that the chances of opening and writing to XLSX files with NeoOffice running on a PPC Mac are very slight?
Also, it's time to say my first hello from Oz, as I'm another (embarrassed) previous non-contributor to this great program. It saddened me to read that the team are struggling for funds, when it would only take a few percentage points of contributors to turn things around. |

And very very… slow… a small file took more than 1/2 hour on my ppc… no problem to open it on a Macintel… _________________ Patrick G4 2x867, 2 Go, 10.4.11... |

Ah! I didn't wait that long as nothing seemed to be happening regarding opening the file!!
I may give it another try and leave it overnight
I've got a blue pill! I hope it's not viagra - I'll have to post a few more comments in order to change the colour, just in case anyone thinks I'm inadequate in the sack. |

Please, try to stay on topic.. Thinking about office software will not help your performance in the sack. Same thing the other way around.
And your next title will be a red pill, so no point in posting for the sake of it.

Oh, i don't know - after all, saving a Word file as .odt can dramatically increase your doc size .

I think I should clarify a few details that might have gotten lost in this thread:
1. Opening on PowerPC versus Intel - NeoOffice 3.0 uses its underlying OpenOffice.org 3.0.1 code to open .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx files so there should not be any difference other than processor speed that when opening on PowerPC or Intel. Now, if like hi_RAM you are using an old G4 PowerPC processor, things will be slow as that processor is basically 10 years behind the the current Intel processors and so anything that requires much processing will be significantly slower on a G4 processor.
2. Opening with NeoOffice 2.2.5 - NeoOffice 2.2.5's underlying OpenOffice.org 2.2.1 did not have any ability to open .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx files so we used a very slow and limited open source code from the OdfConverter project. If you are using NeoOffice 2.2.5 and need to open .docx, xlsx, or .pptx files, I strongly recommend that you use NeoOffice 3.0 as its underlying OpenOffice.org 3.0.1 code is much faster and less limited in its ability to import these file formats.
3. Saving - Since OpenOffice.org has never implemented the ability to save .docx, .xlsx, or .pptx files, both NeoOffice 3.0 and 2.2.5 use the OdfConverter project's code to export these file formats. As narf mentioned in her previous post in this forum topic, their code has very limited support for those formats so you will see quite a bit of loss in formatting.
In sum, I think it bears repeating that currently there is only one application to can reliably import and export .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx files and that application is Microsoft Office. At best, NeoOffice will allow you to get a rough view of these files but due to the limited features in the OdfConverter project's code, saving in these file formats is not recommended.

Thanks pluby
Yes, I'm using a G4 @ 800MHz and NeoOffice 3.0, so I've contacted the sender - my son - and asked him to re-send in a usable format! (OK, so I've failed as a father, with my offspring using MS... sorry!!)
I'll fire up my G5 PPC @ 2GHz later and see how it goes opening the file on that. |

I use a similar G5 as my primary development machine (I do all programming and debugging on a PowerPC machine). When I switched from a G4 a couple of years ago, the difference in speed for me was huge.
