Imported CSV data not recognised as numbers

I'm relatively new to NeoOffice and have just imported some CSV files into spreadsheet with what I thought was a successful outcome.

However I now realise that the figures I've imported in aren't recognised as numbers. I've changed the cells to be text format, then back to numbers format, but nothing seems to be working! Yet if I type figures into the cells along side it they are instantly recognised as numbers and can therefore be "summed"!!!

I'm sure I am being more than a little dumb, but I really don't know what else to try! Please can anyone shed light on this, because otherwise I am going to continually be having to retype all data from imported CSV files - which then defeats the object...

Just to add I have unprotected the cells and that hasn't made a difference either and the CSV file was comma limited...... Thank you!

Can you take a look at the NeoWiki article on Converting a Text String to a Number in Calc?

Can you try the steps listed in first option, Using the Find & Replace Function? Are the cell contents converted from text format to number format?
