Hi,
when trying to start NeoOffice 3.0.1 Patch 0 more often than not I get:
(my translation)
"Program NeoOffice was abended unexpectedly", without even having seen the NeoOffice icon.
Then I start NeoOffice again and everything is fine.
Is there anything I can do in case of the next failure? Or before?

I cannot reproduce this behavior. Since NeoOffice is crashing, can you attach a crash log using the steps in the "Option B" section in this NeoWiki article?

Hi Patrick,
I will do that the next time it happens. I assume it only happens when I start the Mac new and then NeoOffice (not now, when I stop NeoOffice and just start it again; that works fine).

Are you running Mac OS X 10.6.2 Snow Leopard on your machine? If so, can you also post the German message the next time that it happens?

Also, can you install NeoOffice 3.0.1 Patch 1 that I just released? It contains fixes for a few Snow Leopard bugs and, possibily, your crashing bug is another symptom of a bug that we have already fixed.

You can download Patch 1 from the NeoOffice patch download page.

Patrick

One more question: have you run disk repair on your main volume recently? If not, you may been seeing the effects of slight corruption in your main volume's disk. I mention this because I had random crashing in some applications last week in various applications so I ran disk repair and found that there were errors on my disk. Fortunately, disk repair fixed the disk errors and I have had no random crashes since then.

So, just to be safe, can you try repairing your hard drive? To do a repair of your hard drive, you will need to reboot from your Mac OS X installation disk. The Mac OS X installer will run when you do this but don't be alarmed by this. Just proceed through the installer until you see a regular Mac OS X menubar. When you see that, select the Disk Utility menu item and that will run Disk Utility where "Repair Disk" will be enabled. After you finish with Disk Utility, quit it, cancel the Mac OS X installer, and reboot from your main hard drive.

I just did it. I'll be back after disk repair.

I don't get that far.
I am asked if I want to install Leopard.
If not (which is the case), I am told to stop the installation and restart via selection in a menu.
This menu option asks me if I want to restart the Mac OS from disk or DVD.
I select DVD. Then ...

I resign and finally select disk.
Any idea what I did wrong? Am I using the wrong DVD? But I only have this one: "Mac OS X Leopard Install DVD".

Select the "yes" option and keep continuing until a Mac OS X menubar appears. As long as you do go past the panel that asks you to select a volume to install Leopard on, you should be safe.

There is another way to repair your disk that does not need the Mac OS X installation CD. However, it requires you to enter Terminal commands. If you want to try using that disk repair method, do the following steps:

1. Reboot your Mac machine and hold down the Command-S keys while it boots

2. After a minute or so, the Apple logo will disappear and the screen will be black with white text. Type "fsck -fy ; halt" and press the Return key. These two commands will run the Terminal version of disk repair and shutdown the machine after the disk repair is done.

3. After you machine shuts itself down, restart your machine normally.

Ok, I will try either way. But it will take a few days. I'm busy.

In general, I would recommend doing this every so often (I do it about once every month) as I have found on my machines that disks get internal consistency errors after a lot of use and it is best to repair those errors before they become numerous and you lose data. It may only be that my hardware is getting old, but disks do fail so my philosophy is to run disk repair frequently.
