A file crashes NeoOffice every time, but can be opened using Open Office (Windows.)
The file is work for hire so I can't attach it. The crash report is attached. |

I noticed from your crash log that you have the following system hack installed on your machine. System hacks inject their code into all running applications and we have found that bugs in some system hack can cause applications like NeoOffice to hang or crash in unexpected places in the code:
/Library/InputManagers/Smart Crash Reports
To disable this system hack, move the above folder to your Desktop and reboot. You can find the folder by double-clicking on the main volume icon on your desktop and, in the Finder window that appears, navigating down through the Library and InputManagers subfolders.
After moving the folder and rebooting, does NeoOffice still crash when you open your document?
If NeoOffice still crashes after moving the folder and rebooting, we are going to need a sample document that we can use to reproduce the crash.
I understand that the problem occurs with a proprietary document but I am pretty certain that if the system hack is not the cause of the crash, then something specific in your document is what triggers the crash.
The crash log indicates that the crashing is occurring during some sorting operation. Is it possible remove all of the proprietary data in your document except for the data that is being sorted and attach that? If not, can you describe how we would create data that is similar to the data that you are sorting and tell us what settings you have on that data that might trigger sorting on opening?
The key for us is that we need to be able to reproduce the crashing behavior in order to determine the cause of the crash before we can begin fixing it.

OK - I did the following:
- removed /Library/InputManagers/Smart Crash Reports
(administrator rights were required.)
- rebooted machine
- double-clicked on problem file -> crash
- opened problem file using OOOrg 3.1 -> no problem
- pared file to narrow down problem to a certain formula.
- reconfirmed that the file still crashed NeoOffice.
The resulting test file and newest crash log are attached. |

Thank you for that sample .ods file. Using that file, I can easily reproduce the crash in NeoOffice 3.0.1 Patch 1. Also, I can open the file in OpenOffice.org 3.0.1 (the version of OpenOffice.org that NeoOffice is based on) so this is definitely caused by a bug in our code.
I will immediately start searching for the cause of this bug. Once I find the cause and fix it, I will post a test patch that you can try. I hope to find the cause in the next one or two days.

FYI: I have opened bug 3573 to track this issue.

Hi Patric
Looks fixed. After installing the Intel patch I opened both the test and original files three times without a crash.
Thank you ever so much - this makes me very happy!

If ever someone needs evidence of the quality outcomes that are achievable through this project's approach to an iterative development process, this is certainly a case!
Thanks, Patrick, for looking after our PowerPC interests on equal terms with our more recent MacIntels. _________________ Ray Saunders

Ed, Fran, and I all use G5 PowerPC Macs as our primary work machines so we definitely have a vested interest in making sure that NeoOffice is stable on both Intel and PowerPC chips.
I do all of my NeoOffice development PowerPC before I test any changes on Intel because I have found that there are bugs in Apple's compiler on PowerPC that can cause very weird crashes. Because of these PowerPC compiler bugs and because Sun's OpenOffice.org engineers do not support PowerPC, there are lots of fixes for crashing bugs in the NeoOffice code that are not in the OpenOffice.org code.

The problem remains fixed on my machine with NeoOffice-3.0.1-Patch-1-Test-8-Intel. (Tested using the same sample file.)
Thanks again. |

Thank you for verifying that the fix works in all of the patches. The fix for that crashing bug was very tricky to implement and it really helps to know that in each patch the fix still works.
