The search box is there on my Snow Leopard installation. That search box is inserted by Mac OS X, not our code so if it is not there, something is amiss in your Snow Leopard installation.

This probably isn't specific to Snow Leopard (I can reproduce it under Leopard too). It sounds like you have set NeoOffice to a language other that the topmost language in System Preferences (for example, Mac OS X is set to English and NeoOffice to German).

In such a scenario, NeoOffice translates all its menus except the NeoOffice menu (which is automatically translated by Mac OS X based on the topmost language in System Preferences) to German, using OpenOffice.org's translation infrastructure. But to Mac OS X, NeoOffice is actually set to English, not German.

Mac OS X appears to look for a help menu in the language of the application (in this case, English), so it looks for "Help" instead of "Hilfe".

So, to get the search box, you have to set both NeoOffice and Mac OS X to the same language.

Thanks again, that's really interesting. I checked all Mac OS language preferences, they are all set to German (as topmost language). I then changed the NeoOffice setting from default to German, relaunched the program, it remained the same. Then I changed the NeoOffice language to English (USA), and, as you described, the search box is there again, and some menus are in German and some in English. However, I achieved this not by setting both settings to the same, but to different languages (as you can see in the "Suchen" field with the English menus. Maybe I should reinstall NeoOffice/the language pack to solve this?
I don't know what else I could do about my system. Anyway, thanks a lot for your help.

I split the last three posts from that topic into a separate, dedicated topic.

OK, I can reproduce what you see under Snow Leopard.

The search box won't appear in the help menu unless NeoOffice is set to English, regardless of the topmost language in System Preferences (note: NeoOffice being set to default and English being set in SysPrefs counts as NeoOffice being set to English).

I can now reproduce this and it is definitely a bug in Apple's Mac OS X Snow Leopard code. Since this is a Apple bug, we will need to wait until Apple fixes this bug in a future system update.

In the meantime, I have added this Apple bug to our list of Snow Leopard Upgrade Issues NeoWiki article.
