I saw a friend sorting speadsheet rows in a member's name list by hand [!!!]. Room for improvement, I guessed. In order to avoid the First Surname sort topic, I chose to create a sheet, using the function
=CONCATENATE(B3;" ";C3;" ";D3) in column E where the row holds "John" | "vander" | "Brugge". And a SORT on column E would have a nice result.
I entered the formula - NOTHING happens! - apparently there's no formula, just text. Yes, it does start with an =.
I tried any formula, up to a simple =1+1. You might guess the outcome: the text "=1+1", not "2" or even "3". I tried everything: Cell Contents > Recalculate, any setting in Preferences. There's just text and no evaluation whatsoever.
Installed Patch 5 > 7. Same result. What is happening here?! This is a plain core spreadsheet function...

Setting my cell format to text doesn't produce this result for me.
If changing the cell format doesn't work for you, then you could try selecting Tools::Options... and then click NeoOffice Calc in the left hand column and then select View. In the View pane make sure the Formula check box (top right in the Display section) is unchecked.
I am intrigued that you are the second user to report a problem like this. _________________ MacBook Pro

Is your cell format set to text? If so, it just keeps what you entered. try setting the cell format to a numeric one.
It was. Found this advice haunting the forum. It didn't solve the problem. Did numerous tests in new sheets - no formula handling at all.
