I do not know if this is new, but I am suffering from what I assume to be lack of document reflows.

What I mean is that I shorten a paragraph, then the next page is moved up a bit but at the bottom of that page, a hole opens up where text from the next page should be moved up.

Now the the text is not moved up, I cannot see how my changes affect the layout of the rest of my text.

I can force a reflow by adding a hard return around where the reflow should occur and removing it again, but that is not practical.

Best wishes,
Oscar

Update: I can trigger a reflow only by changing something in the lines of text that would be affected. Then that section gets moved, and another hole opens up a page later.

Hmm...I was trying to reproduce this with some lorem ipsum text in a writer document but didn't see realayout issues. Here's what I was trying:

  1. Generate a couple of pages of lorem ipsum text and copy into a new Writer document.
  2. Go to page 2, 3, note what line is the last line of text
  3. Go to first paragraph of page 1, delete a line from the last complete paragraph.
  4. Recheck page 2, 3 to see if the next lines got moved into the page

That's working for me right now, but I wanted to check to see if I misunderstood the issue. I would interpret a text reflow problem toe that no new lines were moved into pages 2 and 3 in the above case. Is that what you're seeing?

That is sort of what I am saying, except I get it with paragraphs that are not moved back up. I have window/orphan protection set to on and sometimes paragraphs are to be kept together with headers.

Do you want my horrible sample document?

Best wishes,
Oscar

OK I don't know about the widowing setting in my test case and since it was straight text there were no headers. If you want to e-mail me the sample document that'd be swell; I could try the test case out on the raw ooo-build version. This would help to check if it's something in the new layout code, a latent ooo-build issue, or an OOo issue.

Here's another test patch to try. I have fixed the stray pixels when spellchecking and the text refreshing problem. In addition, this test patch also contains all of the OOo custom cursors:

I am very happy to report that my text reflow problem is solved. And the spellchecking lines also look normal. Very nice work, Patrick!

Best wishes,
Oscar

Here's another test patch to try. In this test patch, I have fixed bug 2453.

In addition, I have made an enhancement that saves a thumbnail image of the first page of a document in PDF format when saving in the OOo file formats. Up until now, OOo only included a very small, unreadable PNG thumbnail image. While this change has no affect for current users, it will allow I have fixed the stray pixels when spellchecking and the text refreshing problem. In addition, this new thumbnail will allow Leopard users to use Quick Look to preview a document in the Finder:

Since test 3 at least (sorry, I've not kept in a safe place tests 1 and 2) the scalable lines in math formulas appear too large, and the right line or bracket is half cut.

Just a quick question: How does that affect file size? I suppose you downscale any bitmaps that are on that page at least.

best wishes,
Oscar

Since we only snapshot the first page in the PDF, the increase in size is generally proportional to the portion of the OOo file size of the first page. After that, the zip compression applied as a result of putting it an OOo file reduces the PDF by 15% - 30%. Also, I use the OOo "export as PDF" functionality to limit images to only 72 DPI to keep the size small.

After all that, my quick tests show that an image intensive, single slide Impress increased by about 63K bytes and a one page text document increased by about 29K. In contrast, the unreadable OOo PNG thumbnail images are about half the size of the PDF thumbnails.

Neat! I fiddled a bit more yesterday and I found out that there was an instance where a page that had all of its text moved off it was not removed (page reflow vs. paragraph reflow), but I will investigate further before I file a bug on that. It could just be something I did.

Will try test 6 in the mean time Smile.

If it reoccurs, let me know any details to reproduce as I'd like to get this patch really nailed down before I make it official. I forgot to note that in the last test patch I had fixed a small text layout bug that occurred when several spaces were displayed in a row with some fonts.

Details, details...
