Although java is no longer that slow, it is still a mem hog and this is especially true for Mac OSX since the OS itself uses quite a bit of mem. Solution? Maybe we should try to compile the java code using GCJ, but due to the immaturity of classpath, the only way a program can be succesfully compiled is by using the Cocoa-Java binding instead of Swing.
