Hi,
I have a problem and I can't figure what the Hell it is!
After running the neo 1.1 installer, and after it stated (clearly) that the installation was successfull, I can't find the software!!! I tried installing five times. I downloaded the release candidate three times (118 MB), and still no good.
I tried running a serach for NeoOffice "Everywhere", but all it found was the file i downloaded, the drive ant the package inside the drive.
What the hell is going on?!!
using a brand new iBook, 256 RAM, about 16 GB free.

I can suggest a few things :
1) By default it is installed in /Applications - use Finder to look there.
2) In Finder, select any kind of text document, and while holding down the Control key, choose the "Open with" menu item, and hopefully NeoOffice/J should appear in that list - if so, select it, and then double-click the document - that should launch NeoOffice/J.
3) Look in the /Library/Receipts folder - rename/move aside any NeoOffice/J package receipts, and try the installation again (once).
4) Probably would be a good idea to launch the Console application, and see if there are any relevant errors reported in the console.log.

Thank you fpr your quick response!
1. Tried it already- I only found the downloaded file, the mount disk (if mounted) and the package inside the mount.
2. Only MSOffice and Appleworks available when CTRL+click.
3. Did it now. Doesn't help, same results.
4. Launched console, however, I'm not familiar with mac OS (It's my first mac), so it doesn't mean anything to me. I copied the relevant information (from what I could understand) here:

This would seem to be your problem here. Looks like the installer is confused about just exactly where it is supposed to install the program on your computer.
Just to clarify. You d/l'd the NeoJ installer to your hard drive first correct? (as opposed to attempting a "remote" install from the download site, if that is even possible, of course)
Posted: Mon May 09, 2005 6:47 am Post subject: So what should I do?
Yes. I did download it and the file is still on my desktop.
I'm not used to not choosing where to install. In windows you can choose where you want it to be installed.
Moreover, I couldn't find any "uninstall" option. Is there anything similar to that, or you just move the icon to the trash and with it the mac uninstall the software?
OK. I thought from your original post that you had but just figured I'd ask. Whenever I see "localhost" I think of remote things going on because I had the same kind of problem when I went to the "Cups" printing website a while ago and was doing something remotely from there. It hosed my printing setup and I had to start from scratch to get my printing back.
This sounds like a job for Pat (PLuby) or ed (OPENSTEP). There is an FAQ link here but veentually they will probably check in and offer installation suggestions.
Per the following statement of yours, installation was successful:
Quote:
After running the neo 1.1 installer, and after it stated (clearly) that the installation was successfull, I can't find the software!!!
The problem is that you are looking for it in the wrong place.
Please open Finder (i.e. the Mac OS X file manager), click on the "Applications" icon, scroll through the icons, and look for any files with the name "NeoOfficeJ". Double-click on that file.
Note: the "Applications" folder is where nearly all Mac OS X applications are installed by default. Unlike Windows where nearly every installation litters your desktop with icons, most Mac installers just plop the application into the "Applications" folder.
"I tried running a serach for NeoOffice "Everywhere", but all it found was the file i downloaded, the drive ant the package inside the drive."
Pat - I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt about being a troll based on the quote above as I think the Finder search would find hits entering "NeoOffice" but ya never know, maybe he does need to enter "NeoOfficeJ" instead and maybe search "Macintosh HD" instead of "everywhere." If he has Tiger he could use SpotLight, hehe (weak inside joke I guess).
He could also do a search by the "date" he tried to install and see what pops up. Maybe it did put it somewhere wierd for some strange unknown reason. I doubt it, but again ya never know.
2. After clicking on it twice, it mounted a disk onto my desktop. Inside it was a package file that started the installer.
3. After the installer finished and gave me a "the installation was successfull" message i tried looking for the software in /applications and i found no evidence for it there. The same happened the second, third, and fourth times i tried installing.
4. When i found out nothing is in /applications, i ran a search in "Finder" and order it to search "Everywhere" anything that "contains" (not "Is") "Neooffice". The only files he found was the ones I already knew (naming: the downloaded file, the mounted disk, the package and so forth).
5. Only than I came here looking for help. The only thing you guys told me to do more than I did was two things: (A) Look in the /Library/Receipts folder - rename/move aside any NeoOffice/J package receipts, and try the installation again. And (B) Launch the Console application, and see if there are any relevant errors reported in the console log.
6. It did (as it seems - I don't know) report a relevant eror. This: "May 9 12:08:30 localhost mach_init[2]: Server 2277 in bootstrap d03 uid 0: "/usr/sbin/lookupd": exited as a result of signal 1 [pid 1378]".
3. After the installer finished and gave me a "the installation was successfull" message i tried looking for the software in /applications and i found no evidence for it there. The same happened the second, third, and fourth times i tried installing.
At least we know that the downloaded file is OK. If there was any corruption in the downloaded file, installation would not proceed this far.

Do you have more than one volume on your machine? If so, double click on each volume on your desktop and see which volumes have an "Applications" folder. Don't click on the Application icon in the Finder toolbar. Instead, look for a folder in the list of files/folders.
For those volumes that have an Applications folder, open the Applications folder and see if there is a NeoOfficeJ file. My guess (or hope) is that Neo/J just got installed on a different volume.
Edit: if you don't find Neo/J in a different volume, can you tell me if your machine is running Mac OS X 10.4 (i.e. Tiger) or not?

For what it is worth Patrick. I have a clean install of Tiger, installed Neo/J RC via saved dmg & patch 3 on back up CD.
No problems at all with installation.
No problems with Tiger either for that matter _________________ Retired Mobile Kiwi.
G4. iBook with OSX Tiger & Neo Office.
You are all looking for the problem in the wrong place. I have only one HD, and even if I had two or more, it still wouldn't matter, cause the only thing the installer DOES ask you is where you want the software to be installed.
Let's assume for a minute that there is a different problem than simply finding the place it was installed.
Could someone attack the data from the console log?
Here is the data again: "May 9 12:08:30 localhost mach_init[2]: Server 2277 in bootstrap d03 uid 0: "/usr/sbin/lookupd": exited as a result of signal 1 [pid 1378]".
I was told there is a problem with this section.
Anyone knows?
Anyone has a different idea other than that?
