PostPosted: Mon Feb 06, 2006 2:28 am    Post subject: Deadline - Please help! can't open NeoOffice doc on PC -

I have a deadline for submitting a piece of work today, and was working on it last night until 3am. It is a text document, and as I don't have a printer at home, I saved it and emailed it to myself at work to print out. I wonder if I have saved it correctly as it has called itself name.sxw whereas the other documents I Have safely emailed in neooffice from my mac at home can be opened using word for windows at work, and are called "name.doc. Can anyone suggest what I need to do? Is it just I have saved the doc wrongly and need to re-email it to myself?

I'd really appreciate any help!

Hi boufje,

when saving your document in NeoOffice (by the command "Save as"), you should take care, that in the lower popup-menu (file type), you are choosing "Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc)". Additionally, the document has to have the correct extension: You should check "Automatic file name extension", and in any case the document has to have a ".doc"-extension. And, finally, if both (the .sxw and the .doc document) files have been saved to the same directory, don't miss the right one when emailing it (no joke - happened to me once).

Good luck, Martin

P.S: This applies to both, NeoOffice and OpenOffice for X11

Thanks very much for that reassuring reply - I guess this means all is not lost and I just need to go home and re-email this document to myself, thansk very much for explaining the problem.

That is correct. If you always or regularly collaborate with Word users it may be an idea to set Microsoft Office filetypes as the default file types in NeoO. Then all files are saved as Word, Excel etc file types. To do this go to Preferences > Load/Save > General. Under Standard File format in the Document type window, select Text document and in the Save as window to the right select Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP. Do the same for Spreadsheet and Presentation, selecting the corresponding MS Office formats.

Moved this post to NeoOffice Support forum since it was not an OpenOffice.org X11 question.
