I am relatively new to mac, have used pc's for past few years...it would appear to me that I should wait for the openoffice program to be completed...that I am perhaps not at a level of expertise to be downloading this program right now...have an IMac OSX 10.2.6....am desparate for a word processing program that is close to MS Word...any words of wisdom appreciated

In terms of the Neo stuff, yeah, it's not quite there yet...Neo/J is the closest to done, but we can't print yet.
In terms of the OpenOffice.org X11 stuff, it may require patience on your part to debug when things go wrong, but in terms of installing and using it should be OK for you. If you've been a windows user you may be used to its quirks already The biggest gripe people have is about the way it "looks" like Windows, but if you can get by that it "should just work" (fingers crossed).
