PostPosted: Sat Aug 30, 2008 11:05 pm    Post subject: Text Delay/Cursor Blink?

I have done a search, so apologise if this has been dealt with.

While using writer, there seems to be an irritating delay between typing the text and it appearing on the page. I have tried to change various settings, to no avail. Not that I am sure what settings to change.

Any help?

I am using 2.4.4, patch 4, on an Apple G4 iBook with 750 ram

Thanks.

I have experienced this in the past worse than lately, but it is still relevant is a way to my slow machine 867 mghz 12" powerbook and 640 ram. On my old macbook pro core duo - not core 2 duo, and 2 gb's of ram it flies. On my daughter's core 2 duo macbook with 1 GB of ram it also flies. Maybe faster than my macbook pro. So it is your machine.

I also see a speedy save on the macbook pro but when I save on the powerbook it is very slow. The save bar takes a while and the icons have to re-appear. On the macbook pro or my daughter's macbook it happens so quick you do not even notices this as such.

Just my take of it. Hope this helps.

I recently downgraded from a MacBook to an iBook G4 1.33ghz 1GB RAM (long story but basically I needed some cash!) and although the very first few letters typed on my iBook are delayed by a second or so, after that it gets very snappy - no delays at all. In fact I'm impressed at how snappy it is - much quicker for example than OOo.org Aqua at the moment.

What are the specs of your machine?

Please install Patch 5 from the NeoOffice patch download page. Does that speed things back up to normal?

If not, then Can you open the /Applications/Utilities/Terminal application, paste the following commands in the Terminal application window, press the Return key, and paste the output into this bug?:

Code:
ls -l ~/Library/InputManagers
ls -l ~/Library/Application\ Support
ls -l /Library/InputManagers
ls -l /Library/Application\ Support

This will tell us if you have any system hacks and, if so, we can then tell you how to disable them. System hacks inject themselves into all applications on your machine and, as a result, we have found that some system hacks can cause instability or slowness in applications so this is the first place we usually check.

Thanks - I have now downloaded patch 5, which has improved things sufficient to live with, but the delay is still there, so Patrick, here's the results from Terminal. Don't know what half of these are!

(I am running 10.4.11 on a 1.2 GHzPower PC G4)

Thanks for posting the output. From your output, there are 4 possible system hacks. Can you you disable them by moving the following four folders to your Desktop or Trash and then rebooting?:

~/Library/InputManagers/GrowlCamino
~/Library/InputManagers/Edit in WriteRoom
/Library/InputManagers/GrowlSafari
/Library/InputManagers/iCalFix

Note that for the first two folders, "~" means your home folder. You can find the last two folders by double-clicking on the main volume icon on your desktop and, in the Finder window that appears, navigating down through the Library and InputManagers folders.

Not sure if it has made much difference doing that Patrick - perhaps the delay is now not every letter, but ever so slightly more sporadic than that.

I can live with this now, although if there is some other something worth trying?....

Just to confirm, did you reboot? The system hacks that you moved will remain enabled to you do a reboot.

Assuming that you did reboot, the next thing to check is if any other applications are using excessive CPU. If you open the /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor application and click on the CPU% column, are there any applications (other than Activity Monitor) that are using more than 2% of CPU? If so, does the delay go away after you quit those applications?

I find that Safari or Firefox sometimes have very high CPU when some pages, specifically pages with ads, are loaded.

Sorry about the delay, have not been at my computer.

Yes I did reboot, and no, it doesn't seem to make any difference with those apps turned off.

I appreciate the efforts though, thank you.

I know you checked some settings, but I'm wondering if you checked this one:

Go to the NeoOffice menu and choose Preferences (or hit command-,)
Click on Language Settings, then on Writing Aids
In the Options box, scroll down to "Check in All Languages" and make sure that it is unchecked.

If it was checked, does unchecking it improve things?

Hi Lorinda - no, it was unchecked. I unchecked the 2 region settings too - no idea what they are for - but no effect either way.

What about the CPU usage of other applications? Did you open the Activity Monitor application and find anything using the steps in my earlier post?

Yes sorry Patrick, I should have made it clearer in the earlier post - that's what I meant when I wrote it doesn't make any difference with those apps turned off.

OK. My only other theory is that you are experiencing bug 3196. Can you install the test patch from the links in my last post in that bug? Do you see any change after that?
