It appears that the zip format of one of my spreadsheet files has been corrupted. Any ideas on how to recover the data?

I'm using the current version of NeoOffice (2.2.5 patch 1), and I've also tried opening the file in OO.org 3.0 in win xp without luck.

When I try to open the file (grades.ods) I get the "ASCII filter options" dialog box, as though NeoOffice were trying to import a text file. (If I do try to open it, it just returns garbage.)

If I change the extension to .zip and try to unzip it, the only files which I can recover are settings.xml and META-INF/manifest.xml.

Code:
VanillaPancake:tmp alex$ unzip grades.zip
Archive:  grades.zip
file #1:  bad zipfile offset (local header sig):  0
file #2:  bad zipfile offset (local header sig):  84
file #3:  bad zipfile offset (local header sig):  140
file #4:  bad zipfile offset (local header sig):  227
file #5:  bad zipfile offset (local header sig):  281
file #6:  bad zipfile offset (local header sig):  337
file #7:  bad zipfile offset (local header sig):  395
file #8:  bad zipfile offset (local header sig):  449
file #9:  bad zipfile offset (local header sig):  503
file #10:  bad zipfile offset (local header sig):  564
file #11:  bad zipfile offset (local header sig):  12613
file #12:  bad zipfile offset (local header sig):  14254
file #13:  bad zipfile offset (local header sig):  14766
file #14:  bad zipfile offset (local header sig):  31799
  inflating: settings.xml
  inflating: META-INF/manifest.xml

I've edited the file both on a mac and on win XP. That hasn't been a problem in the past. Should I try to avoid it?

I've searched google and the forums, but so far haven't found anything. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. It's got nearly two months of grades in it.

Thanks,
Alex

How did you transfer the file between machines? Were you sending the file via e-mail or were multiple people editing the file from a shared volume? Knowing the answer may not fix the file, but it may at least give us a clue as to what caused the corruption.

The file was saved on a USB (flash) drive used in both machines.

I do almost all of the editing on my mac, and occasional editing on the pc.

Also forgot to mention I'm using the current version of Leopard.

Thanks,
Alex

Does the file appear corrupted on your Windows PC? I ask because maybe the problem is that Mac OS X is having trouble reading your USB flash drive. Many flash drives are formatted with a Windows file system and in the past, Mac OS X has had many problems reading and writing files from volumes formatted as a Windows file system.

Yes, it appears corrupted on win xp as well. That machine is at work (school), and if I remember correctly, it would let me browse the structure, but I couldn't actually extract the files. And OO.o 3.0 on windows gave the same message as NeoOffice (unicode text import dialog).

Also, I've been doing the same routine (modifying files on the same drive on both platforms) for a number of years without problem. I believe that all USB drives use the same formatting, but I could be wrong. The only part that changed is that this year I started using a spreadsheet for my grades, where in the past I used a dedicated gradebook program.

Thanks again for the great program and support,
Alex
