I was trying to apply online for a job, and wanted to include a resume and letter. I was informed that the size of the files exceeded the maximum size of 100 kilobytes. I cut and cut, but could never get that small -- at least in the finder window -- no matter what I did, finder told me the file was 112 kb in size. (when I looked at the file's properties, I may have been able to take a couple of KB off the size, but in order for me to get it below 100, it would have been nothing to read) I don't know what is going on. It's pretty frustrating to me. Is there some setting I don't know about? Other files, for example, which I did earlier in the year or late last year, finder says are smalle (say 36 or 48 kb) and yet it looks longer when I read it. Can anyone help me out? Is it a problem maybe in Safari? I'm writing with NeoOffice and saving them as Word documents (97/2000/XP)

I do not have enough information to know for sure what is causing this but I do have one place for you to check.

I have seen cases in the past where a large number of changes are stored in a document. These changes are not removed and the space freed up until they are accepted. To do this, select NeoOffice's Edit :: Changes :: Accept or Reject menu. If there items listed in the dialog box that opens press the Accept All button and then save the document.

Does that give you a document that is smaller in size?

One more thing to check is whether you have images in the file. Images can greatly increase file size. If there are images in the file try saving a copy of the document without them and see what the file size looks like.

Might be caused by the first page PDF in the .odt files that NeoOffice makes..

Best wishes,
Oscar

Straitsfan is saving in Word format so I don't think this is the issue as NeoOffice only saves the PDF in ODF files.

Hi,

lets first try to solve your problem.
To the why someone can get later.

Does the job application require you to use the Word file format , .doc.
If not I've done some testing.
I toke a 84KB .odt file (OpenDocument file format)
I saved it as a
Word file -> 120KB
.rtf -> 40KB
.pdf -> 52KB

Greetz,
