A bit early for thoughts. First IBM would have to buy Sun. Second IBM would have to make announcements on what they plan to do with the open source properties.
THEN there would be thoughts.  |

That may be, but it hasn't stopped the pundits at various news outlets. Here's an interesting bit of speculation from eWeek:
"IBM could license Solaris under the GNU GPL (General Public License) while reserving the right to distribute Solaris code under proprietary licenses as well—an option that, in the case of its OpenOffice.org-based Symphony productivity suite, proved appealing enough to prompt IBM to base Symphony on an aged, but more liberally licensable, version of OpenOffice.org.
As the steward of Sun's StarOffice, IBM could seed the open-source community while reserving for itself the freedom to cut separate licensing arrangements.... There's no telling exactly what the result of such a series of IBM open-source moves would be, but it seems clear that the open-source community would be richer for the combination."

Sun already does essentially that; OpenSolaris is CDDL-licensed (which is GPL-compatible-enough for there to be GNU userland/Solaris kernel distros out there) with a JCA.
...Which lends further credence to MacRat's statement about eWeek

If IBM is smart, I suspect they should be buying Sun to essentially get cheap access to their IP. I actually think a different company would be a better fit overall as Sun and IBM have lots of overlapping product lines. The HP/Compaq merger was on a similar scale, and they've really yet to transition to a single solution. I think out of all of their unicies only the older DEC Alpha and Tru64 have really gone away...everything else is still a hodgepodge. I think IBM probably could execute better, but who knows

But after Sunday's news I don't think it matters much any longer

From the Tuesday IT PRO Newsletter: 'IBM specifically still appears keen to open up its coiffeurs and make a play for Sun Microsystems.'
So following the merger, we can expect massive across-the-board crew cuts
