I opened a document which I had written with OpenOffice (OpenSuse 11.1). When I opened it with NeoOffice Early Access the line distance had increased. In OpenOffice the document had 1 page, in NeoOffice more than one page.

Line height in NeoOffice and OpenOffice.org are calculated by the native height of whatever font is. While many people assume that if you set the font size to some size like 24 points, the line height will be exactly 24 points, that is rarely the case.

With most fonts, the font designer will make the font height or leading (the desired space between lines) slightly taller or shorter than the point size. Since Apple designs its own font, you may see slight line height differences between the same font on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.

If you want to force the line height to always be the same on all platforms, you can force OpenOffice.org and NeoOffice to ignore the native font height and, instead, use a fixed line height by selecting the paragraphs you want to set, selecting the Format :: Character menu, clicking on the Indents and Spacing tab, changing the Line Spacing listbox from Single to Fixed, filling in the fixed line height, and pressing the OK button.

Another potential problem that I see in your document is that you are using the Monotype Sorts font for the bullets in your document. Since Mac OS X does not bundle that font, NeoOffice is forced to substitute a random font and so your bullets are not likely to render unless that font is installed on every machine that your document is viewed on.

Does that clarify why you are seeing line height differences?

There are two possible explanations of this issue which come to mind immediately. One is the variation of font metrics between different operating systems - so a 10 point font on Linux may be different from the same 10 point font on Windows and different again on Mac OS. Another is that the specific font used on Linux may not be available on the Mac on which you are using NeoOffice and an alternative font may have been automatically substituted.
