In OpenOffice.org, hardware acceleration is deactivated on the Mac. NeoOffice on the other hand offers some options for OpenGL support, however, I am not sure if they have any effect at all, more complex slide transitions in Impress for example are still lacking speed and image quality (in both office suites, not only in OOo or NO).

Is hardware acceleration used in NeoOffice?

I have no idea what your question is. NeoOffice uses Apple's Java code for most drawing operations and, AFAIK, Apple's Java uses native drawing functions.

I forgot to add that most native Mac OS X drawing functions are implemented using OpenGL.

If you are wondering why there is an OpenGL checkbox in NeoOffice's underlying OpenOffice.org code's Option dialog, that I do not know. AFAICT, that checkbox does nothing in OpenOffice.org 3.0 and higher. In OpenOffice.org 2.2.1 (which NeoOffice 2.2.6 Early Access is based on), that called some OpenGL code that was only used for drawing 3D objects in Draw documents.

After rereading your post, I think that your real question is "why is NeoOffice's underlying OpenOffice.org slide presentation code slow?" That is a question that we have been struggling with since OpenOffice.org 2.0 came out. In that release, the OpenOffice.org engineers "optimized" their slideshow presentation code. However, those optimatizations actually made drawing of transitions significantly slower than in the OpenOffice.org 1.x code.

Over the last 3 years, we have made a huge number of performance improvements to NeoOffice's underlying OpenOffice.org slideshow presentation code. Specifically, we put in hundreds of hours of debugging, profiling, and refactoring of the OpenOffice.org code and, after all that effort, we were able to regain most of the slide transition speed lost in the OpenOffice.org 2.x changes.

Edit: more information about the OpenOffice.org 2.x changes that caused us so much pain is in bug 1473.

P.S.: OOo on the Mac doesn't support hardware acceleration according to http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=22979.
