I notice that even though Recent Documents appears in the System category in the Customise Keyboard tab, it doesn't seem possible actually to assign it to a workable key combo. Is that because it's an internal menu that can't be triggered except as a submenu of Files? Or is there some way to call it up from the keyboard (without using ctrl-F2 and accessibility etc.)

The reason that assigning this key shortcut to a menu (not just the Recent Documents menu) is that Mac OS X does not provide the ability to set key shortcut to any menus. Mac OS X only allows menu items to have a key shortcut.

My first theory was that that key shortcut worked in the non-native OpenOffice.org used in their pre-OpenOffice.org 3.0 versions. But assigning the key shortcut in OpenOffice.org 2.2.1 does nothing as well.

So then Fran found this OpenOffice.org issue which has the following quote from one of the OpenOffice.org engineers:

Quote:
The recent file list "command" is only intended for menu configuration and not toolbar. So we have to remove this entry from toolbar configuration dialog.

Basically, this is an OpenOffice.org bug that causes the Recent Documents option to be shown in tabs like the Keyboard or Toolbars tabs where it should not be shown. It should only be shown in the Menus tab where you can move or delete the menu.

I sort of suspected it was showing its face where it wasn't welcome. I was just hoping there was a way of popping it up, but I'll have to work around it using iKey instead. Thanks for the info.

Oh well, that didn't work because iKey can't action the mouse/menus when NeoOffice is active - perhaps something to do with java processes taking over the menubar.

I think you misunderstand how Java works. Java doesn't "take over" menus. It merely provides convenient Java functions that, in turn, call the standard Mac OS X menu functions.

Most likely, the issue is that NeoOffice's underlying OpenOffice.org code is dynamically adding and removing menus. Unlike many applications, OpenOffice.org does not have a fixed set of menu and menu items and actions such as editing or changing focus will cause repopulation of menus and menu items. In the case of Calc, editing can cause menus in the menubar to be quickly removed and added.

It's okay, it's actually some mysterious clash between NeoOffice and iKey - iKey is not trying to access menus, it's simply trying to move the mouse and click on a screen x,y location - but as soon as NeoOffice gets focus, iKey can't get any further through its script.

I'm looking into this with Script Software (the devs) to see if they can figure out why this is happening. It may be a SL iKey bug, as I didn't have this problem last time I tried using iKey and NeoOffice together (a while back).
