PostPosted: Wed Dec 30, 2009 9:37 pm    Post subject: Switching footnotes to endnotes

I have a NeoOffice document with over 1,000 footnotes. Is there any practical way to switch them all to endnotes? It would take a long time do make these changes one by one.

Also, how do I have footnotes (for explanations) and endnotes (for citations) in the same document?

Thanks for any help.

Would it be possible for you to attach your document? I don't have any documents with footnotes so if you are not comfortable attaching your document to a public site, then I can try to mock up a sample document to try to emulate your case, but if we can work with one of your documents, my hope is that I can determine whether or not there is fast conversion method in NeoOffice's underlying OpenOffice.org code that we can make use of.

If you can attach a sample document, the steps for attaching a document to a post are in this forum topic.

Ignore my last post as I found the answer to your question. It took me a while to find the answer, but I found that you can convert all of your footnotes to endnotes by selecting the Tools :: Footnotes menu and in the dialog that appears, select the "End of document" radio button and press the OK button.

Does that convert all of your footnotes to endnotes for you?

Thanks Patrick. Clicking the "End of document" radio button will indeed switch all of my footnotes to endnotes. It works great.

But, how do I have * footnotes (for explanations) and numbered endnotes (for citations) in the same document? I've tried to do this but they all switch one way or the other way. If all my notes are endnotes, and I try to make a footnote, ALL the endnotes switch to footnotes. Any ideas?

You can mix footnotes and endnotes. However, the bad news is that my previous steps cannot be used to convert existing footnotes to endnotes as it makes all footnotes act like endnotes.

To mix footnotes and endnotes, you will first have to globally switch back all endnotes to footnotes by selecting the Tools :: Footnotes dialog, select the "End of page" radio button, and press the OK button.

After doing this, all footnotes will again be footnotes. Unfortunately, NeoOffice's underlying OpenOffice.org code does not have the ability to select multiple footnotes so you will need to do the following steps for each footnote:

1. Go to the end of a page and for each footnote, double-click on the footnote number.

2. A dialog will appear. If you want to change that footnote to an endnote, select the "Endnote" radio button and press the OK button. If you want that footnote to remain a footnote but with a "*" instead of a number, select the "Character" radio button, type a "*" character in the text field next to it, and press the OK button.

3. Repeat for each footnote in the footnote list at the end of the page and then continue to the next page.
