PostPosted: Sat Mar 13, 2010 9:16 pm    Post subject: how to remove floating quotations?

Friends --

When I scroll down a page of Neo Office text, sometimes a line number and a line of text from the page I'm scrolling appear. As I scroll, the highlighted line changes. It has a pale yellow background. It usually happens when I'm reading the text of stories I've pasted in from online newspapers.

How do I get rid of this feature?

Thanks
Don

I do not know how to reproduce the behavior that you are seeing. Can you attach a sample document that we can use to try and reproduce this on our machines?

You can attach a sample document to your post using the steps in this post.

I've no idea if this is the same phenomenon or something different - but in Neo (and in OOo 3.2) pasting web page content directly (as opposed to Paste Special as Unformatted) into a Writer doc results in unexpected Notes appearing in the right margin.

Thank you, yoxi. The paste-unformatted command got rid of those unwanted margin notes from online newspapers. However the unwanted little page-number reminders in the boxes still appear, then disappear after a few seconds.

Patrick --

I don't know how to capture and send you an attachment that shows the problem, because the page-number reminders with their little headlines disappear either when I click on the page, or they go away on their own. I can't grab them in a screen shot.

I tried your link to instructions on how to send an attachment.

I did not ask for a screen snapshot. I asked for a sample document that I can use to reproduce the problem. You need to attach a sample document and tell us the steps to reproduce the problem so that we can see what you are seeing.

Thanks very much, but now that I'm pasting everything via "paste special unformatted" the problem seems to have gone away.

If you want to get rid of the Page xx / yy alerts when you're scrolling through your Writer doc, you need to go to NeoOffice::Preferences (Or Tools::Options, which is the same thing) and then choose NeoOffice::General and uncheck the Tips checkbox.

Does yoxi's steps do what you were trying to do? If so, those things that you are trying to hide are called "tooltips". Your original post confused me and I did not realize that you were talking about tooltips.

I think cervus was asking about two different things at once - one is the page tooltip, and the other is this mad thing where you get spurious Notes when you paste in from a web page (that's the 'pale yellow' bit). I suspect if you're new to Neo, it's not immediately obvious that these two behaviours are nothing to do with each other.

I'm a good guesser (sometimes) Cool.

yoxi & patrick --

Thanks very much. Now both problems seem to be gone. Half the trouble in any program is just knowing what to call the function you're trying to change.

Glad to be of help, Don. yes, even in the days when software had an actual manual, it was still worth reading the whole thing through twice so that you knew what the designers were calling things! Like to understand the instructions on p.26, you had to have already read p.277. These days it's even harder.

Those yellow boxes are actually Notes (which MS Word calls Comments) and are a useful feature for authors. I've no clue why Neo/OOo thinks some of the code coming to it from a web page paste is actually Notes, but there you go, that's the wonder of Standards.
