Posted: Fri May 14, 2010 3:08 am Post subject: Problem with Cursor when using Arial Narrow font |
|
I am having terrible trouble with the placing of the cursor when using the font Arial Narrow. As I type normal left to right text, the cursor is appearing to the left of the end of the typed line, and the last character or two is not properly displayed and/or is obscured by the cursor.
Also, if I highlight a letter to delete it anywhere in the text, the letter deleted tends to be one character to the right of the letter highlighted, and I experience similar problems when simply placing the cursor in the text to insert or delete text.
I don’t normally use Arial Narrow, and for space reasons I no longer have earlier versions of NeoOffice to check whether this is a new problem or not.
It is not simply a problem with the font since it works OK in AppleWorks.
The work round is simply not to use Arial Narrow, unfortunately for one particular document provided from elsewhere I need to. _________________ MacBook Pro

I cannot reproduce that behavior on my Mac OS X 10.4.11 or Mac OS X 10.6.3 machines. For me, typing or moving the cursor through Arial Narrow text works as expected.
One possible cause is that you have more than one Arial Narrow font installed on your machine and those two fonts are conflicting with each other. Can you launch the /Applications/Font Book application, find the Arial Narrow font, expand it, and see if there is a black dot next to any of the "Regular", "Bold", or other entries? If so, can you select those dotted entries and then select the Edit :: Disable Font menu?
Did you find any dotted entries and, if so, did disabling them stop the problem?

OK I've been through all my fonts and eliminated duplicates, and quit and relaunched NeoOffice. I'm still getting the same problem. I attach a document where the problem is present for me, and a screenshot of the same document showing a letter highlighted in the text. Pressing delete with that letter highlighted actually deletes the letter 'i' to the right of the highlighting. _________________ MacBook Pro

Sorry, but I still cannot reproduce this on either of my Mac OS X 10.4.11 or 10.6.3 machines even when I select the View :: Nonprinting Characters like you have.
The only other thing that I can think might cause this is that you have a non-Apple Arial Narrow font installed and when you disabled Apple's font when you elimininated duplicates.
Can you tell us what Mac OS X version you are using? Also, can you launch /Applications/Font Book, select Arial Narrow's "Regular" font, select the Preview :: Show Font Info menu, and copy the "Version", "Location", and "Unique name" fields into this forum topic?

This is the only version of Arial Narrow on my machine AFAICT:
Version Version 1.15
Location /Library/Fonts/Arial Narrow
Unique name Arial Narrow Regular : 1991
iBook 1.33 GHz 1.5GB PowerPC G4, OS X 10.4.11 NeoOffice 3.1.1 Patch 0
Obviously there is some difference between your setup and mine. I am getting this problem with NeoOffice using Arial Narrow, and not with AppleWorks, Pages or TextEdit.
I am guessing that there might be some issue about handling kerning or something which is specifically connected to the Arial Narrow font. I appreciate, however, that you can't very easily solve a problem that you can't reproduce. _________________ MacBook Pro

That definitely is not an Arial Narrow font that is bundled with my machines. In fact, my machines have no /Library/Fonts/Arial Narrow file.
My version of Arial Narrow is version 2.35 and was installed by Microsoft Office so I suspect that your font is a very old version of the same font that was installed by an old version of Microsoft Office or AppleWorks.
Unfortunately, I cannot reproduce this problem without having that same font and I suspect that unless you have an old Version of Microsoft Office or AppleWorks (which I don't), I won't be able to download that font anywhere.
If you can find where I can download that version of that font, I can install the font and investigate the problem. However, don't try to attach the font file as it will likely be a "multifork" file and uploading it will strip out most of the bits from the file.

We had a similar problem in bug 3582. While it would be easiest to investigate this if I had the old version of the font that you have, I will take a look at the fix I made for that other bug and see if there is something obvious that I missed that might cause the problem that you see.

Thank you for the link. I installed the font and I can now reproduce the bug. I will investigate it and post when I have some news to report.

FYI: I have created bug 3604 to track this issue.

FYI. I can reproduce this same bug in OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 as well so it is definitely an OpenOffice.org bug.
I can't make any promises, but I will see if this is something that I can fix. From what I see, the bug is caused by the OpenOffice.org's Writer code expecting that text with the "dot" glyph instead of spaces will have the exact same glyph positions as the same text with spaces.
Nice assumption, but it rarely occurs so what I plan on trying to do is to layout the text with spaces and use the glyph positions of the text spaces to position the text.
I don't know if that will work, but I will give it a try.

After much debugging of the code, I now know why James3359's Arial Narrow font has a "dot" character that is wider than the font's "space" character: his Arial Narrow font has no "dot" glyph. In short, this is not a bug but is the result of James3359's Arial Narrow font being a font with a very limited number of supported characters.
Since there is no "dot" glyph, NeoOffice does put the "glyph not found" character there, NeoOffice finds the first font that supports the "dot" character and falls back to whatever "fallback font" was found. Since Arial Narrow is a very narrow font, the fallback font in most cases will have a wider "dot" glyph than Arial Narrow's "space" glyph.
Since the problem is the old Arial Narrow font and newer Arial Narrow fonts support the "dot" character, I will close bug 3604 as not a bug.

Patrick, thank you for all the hard work you've put in on this. Sorry that it was this one anomalous font that caused the trouble. Good call on it not being a bug IMHO.
There are two easy workrounds (i) use a different font, or (ii) turn off the display of non printing characters.
