Because this is similar but different to the highlighting quirk:

- Start with a doc with several paragraphs of clean text
- Select a few words, click on Background Colour dropdown and choose a background colour
- Entire paragraph gets that background colour, not just selected text
- Selecting just some of that text and repeating using No Fill again converts the whole paragraph

Note also that the 'last colour used' strip on the Background Colour icon changes to match the current background colour of the text the cursor is on, which is not expected behaviour.

This is not a bug. It is standard behavior in all versions of OpenOffice.org.

Your "expected behavior" makes no sense. If the Background toolbar button behaved as you expect, wouldn't it be identical to the Highlight toolbar button?

Just a reminder for our moderators: the scope of the NeoOffice project has not changed and we are still limited to keeping the OpenOffice.org code running natively on Mac OS X. Fixing OpenOffice.org's feature idiosyncracies and bugs is still not something we have the engineering resources to do.

I've always been puzzled by the difference between highlight and background colour - now digging into the Help, I see that background colour is by implication paragraph background colour, which they should have named more explicitly.

My 'expected behaviour' made sense given the parameters I was expecting, sorry if this was a wild goose chase.

I still think it's inconsistent to have the colour strip mean 'last colour used' on some icons (text colour, highlighting colour), and something completely different on this one - but that's clearly an OpenOffice UI inconsistency issue, not a NeoOffice one.

And historically the color icons have been particularly bad for having inconsistent UI behavior Razz I remember filing some OOo bugs about issues related to them back in the day, before I realized the futility of it Razz
