FYI. I usually delete any spam postings that I run into so if you are wondering where they go, I am deleting them.

People, you don't need to link to the forum spam. I see them when I log in every morning and read all of the forums and I delete them immediately.

But you're asleep when we see them (8 AM european daylight time) Smile. We're just trying to be helpful. As is, I'll stop reporting any and give the moderators time to wipe them.

There was a period when you were on vacation and Ed was, well, I don't know what Ed was doing, earning a living perhaps Smile, and the postings seemed to get out of control and stay up for a while, which I think is what prompted the "obsessive spam reporting" in all of us Smile

No problem. I just wanted people to know that I am actively deleting the spam postings as soon as I see them.

OK, the forum spam is annoying, but thanks all for helping to cull it. I recently added a couple of more folks as moderators to help organize things as this forum becomes both more popular and a more popular spam target for googlebombing and the like.

Eventually I'll work on implementing a security code entry mechanism for anonymous posting (e.g. the "type the numbers in the image below" kind of security code entry) but for the time being hopefully the human filtering approach will suffice as I have some weddings and a CVS server that needs some love... Smile

Let us see how this works out first Smile.

Between the various new members of "The Council" we should have enough eyes in enough timezones (or waking hours Smile) to zap the spam before almost everyone else notices Smile So Ed can safely tend to his CVS server and show up at weddings....

(And the ability to move posts to the correct forum will be helpful from time to time, although of late postings have amazingly been in the correct fora....)

Ed, does it make sense to keep track of the IP/hostnames of the forum spammers when deleting them?

Not really, as IP bans are not as effective in the days of DHCP zombie spammers. What is useful, though, is any *registered* account that is spamming. I can delete those accounts easily.

I really do hate forum spam and am upset since there's no good solution, but we'll find something eventually.

Just a heads-up to the moderating team to be careful which delete button you press Smile

When deleting the spam "Hallo" post from "Me" in NeoLight this afternoon, the entire two-page thread ended up getting deleted Sad

(The buttons at the bottom of the page apply to the whole thread; the buttons next to "quote" and "edit" apply to a single post.)

I don't remember all the posts on page 2, but Google has a cache of page 1. It's not a critical loss, I don't think, but some of Ed's notes on how he figured out the encoding issue were there.

Edit: Here's page 2 as of Sept 26, so I guess there was only one post on it.

One of us was bound to do it sooner or later Smile At least I had been looking at it (I should have just deleted it myself before running off to get dinner!) and we didn't actually "lose" the content thanks to Google....
