If you have a german keyboard and want to access curly brackets in OOo1.1.2 under OSX10.4.2, don't use Alt-8 and Alt-9 as you're used to, but use Alt-Apple-8 and Alt-Apple-9 instead.
Latter combinations will only work if there are no Keyboard Shortcuts associated with them. So if a combination doesn't work for you, check out the keyboard shortcuts: Open System Settings -> Hardware: Keyboard & Mouse -> Keyboard Shortcuts and disable the shortcut for the key combination you need or reassign it to another combination.
I disabled "Toggle Zoom" to make Alt-Apple-8 (opening curly bracket) work.

(This may also work with different OS/OOo versions. I don't have another configuration to test it, so your mileage may vary.)

Background:
On a german keyboard, curly and square brackets (and pipe, backslash etc) are not available as single keys but must be accessed via Alt-key combinations. Alt-8 and Alt-9 produce curly brackets in MacOSX programs as well as in an xterm window. Nevertheless, using these combinations in OOo1.1.2 didn't result in anything at all. Fiddling with the X11 keyboard settings from the X11 menu, as recommended in other topics of the forum, did not change the situation.
I then "trial-and-error"ed out Alt-Apple-9, wondering about the non- functional Alt-Apple-8, until I thought of Keyboard Shortcuts, and: voila! I type formulas happily ever after.

P.S.: Should you need a german translation of this message, feel free to ask!

rgds, Albert.
