Jim, I had exactly that same problem for a while. I then reinstalled Neo 0.7 and found it worked, though I had to fix the /Applications permissions to 775 from 755. Then I put the p4 directly on it and found p4 wasn't crashing on me, but instead giving me a garbled OS X print dialog which got worse as you tried to change options...

Apricot,

I am pretty sure the problem is my fix for the keyboard switching problem. I won't go into the technical details of why, but it seems to a very likely cause of the problem.

I am working on a better fix for this keyboard problem right now. I hope to have a new patch for you later today. Can you test it if I post a new patch today? If so, I can include the fix in the 0.7.1 release.

The permission issue is a bug I filed that Patrick has fixed in the installer. That will become apparent when the full 0.7.1 comes out.

I usually run Disk Utility to repair permissions after I have to re-install Neo/J.

Patrick, I'll look out for a new patch today, though it might not be tested until after 8pm Pacific...

Jim, I ran Disk Utility too, but it takes forever, so I just did

sudo chmod 775 /Applications

once I realized what the correct permissions were supposed to be.

Apricot and Jim,

I have uploaded a new patch that hopefully fixes your scrambled print dialog and crashing bugs. The patch is here:

http://www.planamesa.com/neojava/downloads/temp/NeoOfficeJ-0.7-patch-5.tar.gz

Can you try it out tonight and let me know if you see any crashes or other unexpected problems? If there are no problems, I will include the fix in the NeoJ 0.7.1 binary that I am planning on uploading tonight.

Thanks,

Patrick

PostPosted: Tue Nov 25, 2003 8:59 pm    Post subject: patch 5 is better

I've printed with it and previewed with it and the text dialog isn't messed up.

(Just for the record.... I did have a couple of bizarre things happen, but I can't reproduce them. First, during a drag to the NeoJ icon in the dock, the drag halted and NeoJ gave the beachball of death. I force-quit it. Second, I did something which made a new document pop up as a window that was mostly pale-pinstriped (a la background window) but the under the title text was foreground-silver. I'm happy to say I can't reproduce either one.)

I say print it.

Apricot,

I noticed that you did two downloads of patch-5 from my website. Both were different sizes. I admit that I sneaked an updated patch file and it appears that your second download grabbed the most recent.

Did you only see the beachball of death with the first download?

are you sure that was me twice? I only have one download recorded. I grabbed it again and it was indeed a different size (old: 4993293, new:4993174). Unfortunately, patch5v2 is worse for me than patch5v1.

In 5v2 I tried to print a Preview and got a garbled 'Printing Page 1/2' Panther alert. Then soffice.bin quit again as we've discussed before.

I reverted to 5v1 by untarring the old p5. I had no such problems. I like p5v1 better and I'm going back to it. Smile

Well, I have some hassles to keep my NeoJ install in sync. Is it due to time lag between Cal and Europe or what?
Anyway, I trashed the 0.7.1 prerelease and downloaded the last 5v2 (4993174 bytes) patch,.
I'm able to switch the keyboard, print a sample test page with both latin a cyrillic characters, and other simple files as well. I got no crash nor hang, up to now.
NeoJ is now trying to print (preview) my graphic intensive file (the one you have Patrick) and I'm not sure it'll succeed as it is eating all my CPU for a while and a lot of swap (VSZ=1300656 RSS=279220)
...
After more than an hour (50 mn CPU time of 667 Mhz G4) the print did terminate. The result is a blank PDF. The file itself is not empty but very small.
While the print process was going on I noticed that the print dialog got messed up when NeoJ was made frontmost. The application itself was clean and is now running OK.

As my copy of OO/X11 got messed by Panther upgrade (dylibs and such), I wish I do not need to print "difficult" files for a while!

Patrick,

I downloaded patch 5 from the link above at 9 AM EST (it starting to seem that timing is important here). After re-installing Neo/J and installing patch 5, I still go the soffice.bin crash.

Timing was important. Last nightmy website kept going down and I was never really sure if my upload made it so I kept reuploading.

Anyway, I found Apricot's drag problem is very reproducible when you drag a file from the Finder onto a NeoJ window. I traced this back to the keyboard layout changing code. Sad

So, it is back to square one on this keyboard lyaout changing. I'll let you knoe when I have a new patch.

Since timing can matter, I can't help noticing the odd times reported on the trinity BBS.

Are you in Australia?

No. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I think time in this forum is a user preference. However, mine's set (for some reason) to U.S. Mountain time.

PostPosted: Wed Nov 26, 2003 8:32 am    Post subject: patch 5 is unusable

I reverted to patch 2.
I found the way to crash patch 5v2: open the printer setting dialog tho select an other printer than the default.
The patch2 is MUCH faster than the 5v2.

A few remarks.
Is it due to Panther or did I miss the change before but the display is now using 96 dpi. My screen (15" titanium) is 4 p/mm= 101.6 dpi and now I set the display factor to 106% to get the proper real size scaling.

I have a .sxd file. It use Skia font. It open and display correctly. When I try to print it, all text got messed in the printout and in the display. The file itself is not messed: if I save it under a new name, close and reopen, it display correctly.
The text mess is around spacing-kerning, in both horizontal and vertical axis. This bug is also related to printer setting dialog because:
- open the file : display correctly.
- print the file : get messed (but the printer destination is set by side effect)
- save the messed file (under a new name or make a fake modif to be able to save it under the same name)
- close and reopent the file : display correctly.
- print it : OK.
- change the printer setting via the File menu item : get messed again.

So, each time you change the printer destination something wrong happens.

IMO, we need more testing and tuning before releasing a new version. There are many small glitch around with Panther which need to be cleaned.

I have posted a patch that removes all of the keyboard layout change fix since my keyboard layout change hacks were causing too many other bugs. It is available here:

http://www.planamesa.com/neojava/downloads/temp/NeoOfficeJ-0.7-patch-6.tar.gz

I will still continue working on finding a way to fix the Java 1.3.1 keyboard layout changing bug. In the meantime, the above patch should allow everyone to continue testing the other 0.7.1 bug fixes and features.

Max,

Is printing messed up with patch5v2? If so, does this problem going away with the above patch?

Also the 96 DPI is not a Panther issue but a change in NeoJ. I found that in the Windows and X11 OOo code, they set the minimum resolution display at 96 DPI. I discovered that this is necessary because 72 DPI causes all sorts of alignment errors in the OOo code because OOo makes rounding errors when it converts 72 DPI coordinates to the 96 DPI coordinates that it expects.
