All:

Mox brought up this most interesting subject on the mac@openoffice.org mailing list today.

My question is: Does NeoOffice create such a beast as a plugin to Mozilla/Firefox that will read NeoOffice 1.2 (and in the future 2.0) files. If not so, why not?

To my knowledge, that plugin is only built/works on Windows.

This, however, is cross-platform and shows the wonders of using XML (note GMail does something similar) but is not WYSIWYG-true-to-the-original.

The long and the short answer is that on Mac right now there is no equivalent to ActiveX controls or to the JavaBean. Brief answer is that, due to security restrictions imposed by the WindowServer on Mac OS X, it is not possible for one process to draw into windows belonging to another (unlike Windows or X).

I will look at that later. The plugin also works with UNIXes, including Linux because they are X11 based. This leads to the next question, do we want to build an Aqua (Carbon/Cocoa/Java who cares) plugin that would work with the Mac version of Mozilla/Firefox? Or can we bundle in the other plugin and give it credit where credit is due?
