I am a X11 and fink user trying to install and run OpenOffice. This has been my experience so far:

1) The installer would not finish because it claimed that I had an old version of libfreetype and gave me an URL to get the a newer version.

2) Downloaded and installed the new libfreetype. When I re-run the OpenOffice installer I got the _same error_

3) By searching this forum I was able to manually remove the old version of libfreetype and create some symbolic links to solve the installer problem. So I was able to complete the installation process.

4) I launched "Start OpenOffice.org" and got a "Could not find OpenOffice.org" error.

5) The installer mentioned and alternative way of launching OpenOffice, and this is what I got:

Code:
~ % setenv DISPLAY localhost:0                                        3:40:22pm
~ % setenv DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH /Applications/OpenOffice.org1.0.3/program:/Applications/OpenOffice.org1.0.3/program/filter/:/usr/X11R6/lib
~ % cd /Applications/OpenOffice.org1.0.3/program/                     3:42:19pm
/Applications/OpenOffice.org1.0.3/program % sh soffice                3:42:30pm
/Applications/OpenOffice.org1.0.3/program/soffice.bin:
   cannot open display "localhost:0"
Please check your "DISPLAY" environment variable
as well as the permissions to access that display.
(See "man X" resp. "man xhost" for details)

At this point I launched X11 and tried again:
Code:

/Applications/OpenOffice.org1.0.3/program % sh soffice                3:42:48pm
salogl.cxx/GetOGLFnc():  Could not load symbol glFlush
dyld: /Applications/OpenOffice.org1.0.3/program/soffice.bin Undefined symbols:
OpenGL undefined reference to _gll_noop expected to be defined in /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.dylib
OpenGL undefined reference to _gll_pkey expected to be defined in /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.dylib
Trace/BPT trap

So I searched to see if I had that library:

Code:
/Applications/OpenOffice.org1.0.3/program % locate libGL              3:50:14pm
/System/Library/Frameworks/OpenGL.framework/Versions/A/Libraries/libGL.dylib
/System/Library/Frameworks/OpenGL.framework/Versions/A/Libraries/libGLImage.dylib
/System/Library/Frameworks/OpenGL.framework/Versions/A/Libraries/libGLSystem.dylib
/System/Library/Frameworks/OpenGL.framework/Versions/A/Libraries/libGLU.dylib
/usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.1.2.dylib
/usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.1.dylib
/usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.a
/usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.dylib
/usr/X11R6/lib/libGLU.1.3.dylib
/usr/X11R6/lib/libGLU.1.dylib
/usr/X11R6/lib/libGLU.a
/usr/X11R6/lib/libGLU.dylib
/usr/X11R6/lib/libGLw.a
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/libGL.TXT

I ran out of ideas on how to make this work. Any advice is appreciated.

Regards,

Gustavo Delfino

Are you using Apple X11 or XFree86? If you are using Apple X11, it has a shared library libGL that conflicts with the System GL.framework library. Leave off the "/usr/X11R6/lib" from the terminal launching instructions or try moving Apple X11's GL library out of the way.

Thank you OPENSTEP, I am using Apple's X11 v0.2. Now I get window saying:

The application cannot be started.
The configuration directory "/Users/gdelfino/Library/Preferences/OpenOffice.org1.0.3" could not be found.
Do you want to start the setup application to repair your installation?

I clicked "yes"

Then it asks me to "insert the disk labeled OpenOffice.org 1.0.3 into the installation drive". I clicked "Browser" and selected the mounted installer image "/Volumes/OOo 1.0.3 X11" and got an error "File LICENSE.html not found". I tried selecting "/Applications/OpenOffice.org1.0.3" instead of "/Volumes/OOo 1.0.3 X11" but got the same error.

Any help is appreciated.

Is your home directory in /Users, or on another drive? e.g. with an open terminal:

Code:

cd ~
pwd

Does the path start with /Users/gdelfino? If not, you may have run into the same problem as the Home directory not in Users indicated in this thread. You may need to edit your .sversionrc file to point to the right path to your home directory.

No is is not. Thank you for your help. I am now running OpenOffice and I like it. Specially the RegExp support and the infinite(?) nesting of IF's in the spreadsheet (Excel is limited to 7).

What I don't like is that when I press CTRL-Enter inside a formula, it becomes text (this doen't happen in Excel)

Glad it finally got working! For the Ctrl-Enter stuff, I can think of two options:

1) File an issue in IssueZilla at OpenOffice.org against the "calc" or "sc" module describing the current behaviour and what you would prefer.

2) Try to find a way to adjust the keybindings of Calc to not perform that action. I haven't looked at the Calc keybindings myself beyond menu items, but it may be possible.
